Is your google assistant on strike?  It turns out this feature does not work if the battery-saver feature is enabled on the LG G7 phone.  Turned off the battery-saver and the google assistant now responds  to voice versus clicking the button on the side of the phone, even when phone is locked, which is how I want it to work.  Give me a break; how about documenting this guys!
