How can I set Google Assistant to unlock my phone when the screen is off?

On phones running Android 8.0 and up, you can’t unlock your phone by saying "Ok Google." Instead, you can use the Google Assistant on your lock screen. Learn how to control what information you see and hear.

@ James M. To clarify what's meant by, "Instead, you can use the Google Assistant on your lock screen":

Does this mean that you must manually unlock the phone in order to launch Google Assistant (on devices running Android 8.0 or higher)? In other words, there is no way to voice unlock the phone in order to begin an "OK Google" or "Hey Google" command?

If I understand that correctly, that would significantly decrease whatever hands-free utility that my 8.0+ phone had to offer -- at least for any Google Assistant functions. Bummer.

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

When I use Google Assistant directly from tablet mic & speaker by either saying ok google or tapping the icon. It can do things like Add Milk to my Grocery List.  It works perfectly & Keep reflects the additions to the Lists Reliably... But try the exact same command thru a paired bluetooth audio device & the Assistant goes Stupid and repeats "Not sure how to help with Add Milk to my Grocery List"    What is the Deal ?

If I unlock the tablet screen she understands the command and does them even thru the bluetooth...
BUT... If the tablet screen is locked(Black) She behaves as I described above... Thats rather useless
and totally defeats the purpose of using a bluetooh to be hands free of the tablet to walk around and
issue these commands free of the tablet being in my hand.  Why ?  This should work!

Same issue

It worked now, it doesn't.

Tried retraining the voice match, turning it on and off

I have exactly the same issue. You know it's silly when "ok google, what's the time" responds with "For that, you need to unlock your phone."

Then, what's the point? For the most part, I only want to use the assistant when the phone is locked. I don't have a Bluetooth device I can conveniently associate to keep my phone unlocked, nor do I want to, rendering my device insecure. I have already gone down the route of training the voice model too, which doesn't seem to make any usable difference.

There's a massive difference between unlocking the device and allowing the assistant to respond to non-privacy-invasive commands such as getting the time, sending a text message or starting/stopping podcasts or music or turning the air conditioner off, which are all straight up DENIED.

The fact I can't control this security setting myself is a design failure and renders the assistant less useful than Siri or even Bixby. iPhone anyone?

The fact that this feature is no longer available to the phone's owner is absolutely ridiculous, and very disappointing... The greatest reason I have for using Android is that it allows you the freedom to do what you want with it - unlike Apple, which is a prison... A very pretty prison, but still a prison. Come on Google, please give me my autonomy back! Sure, it may be less secure, but that should be MY decision at the end of the day.
