Searched settings for assistant audio output settings and googled general use case responses with no avail.

Is Google Assistant integrated into your Android Auto phone app or on vehicle display?

Hi James - I am using the Pixel XL 2. And can use Android Auto on my phone for this process. But it doesn't work inside of Android Auto or outside of the app.

Same here. Used to work fine for me, but at some point over the last 2 months it has broken. Not sure if this was since the Android 9.0 release or the latest Android Auto update. Also on the Pixel 2 XL.

EDIT: My car headunit doesn't support display, so this is in the app on my phone.

Same issue here too.  Pixel 2 in a Toyota Tundra with an old(er) non touchscreen head unit.   I can stream audio (Spotify, Pandora, Youtube etc)  and make phones calls.  I will get navigation directions ONLY if I have music actively streaming.   At no time do I get the Google Assistant voice anymore.  Which means no more hands free reading SMS message.   It used to work.  I used to be able to play the "riddle game" with the kids on the way to school.  What happened??

Same issue here. Any fix for this issue or is reliant on a AA update

Similar issue. Assistant stops working as soon as I'm connected to my car Bluetooth. A fix would really help.

Similar issue. First time I press the button to talk to Google I hear the ping and the answer. After that, silence when pressing the button and when Google is responding. I see the icon showing the assistant is "talking" but no sound. Phone and music through Spotify in AA works fine.

Same issue here - both samsung s9 and Pixel 2XL. Phone only Android Auto with bluetooth connection (Car doesn't support android auto). I 'think' it is trying to play over the 'media' channel but the car has paused the music and muted (I guess) thats because of the mic selection (phone channel) is in use is my guess.

I have the exact same problem with a Pixel and 2012 Toyota. Been fighting it for weeks. Once my phone connects to the car audio, the phone's audio player is paused. Even if I turn on Google Maps, no sound comes from the speakers. If I play Pandora, Google Maps speaks. If I just pause Pandora, it also silences Google Maps instructions. Somehow Pandora has become the default audio player for my Pixel in my Toyota.
Today I opened Pandora, then opened Google Maps, then closed Pandora (not paused but closed) and the last song playing stayed displayed on my radio and Google Maps instructions came through the car speakers. It seems to have fooled either the Pixel or Car Audio that the audio player was still on and I got Google sounds.
Makes no sense to me.

Same issue here.  Not hearing the assistant at all over Bluetooth.  Alpine head unit, single DIN.  Audio works fine (Spotify).  Ok Google, squeeze, and tapping my assistant widget causes the screen to react and engage Assistant, but no audio cues at all.  I can see the Assistant "talking" bubbles, but no joy, just silence.  Messages are"read", but completely silent.  Doesn't matter if AA is running or not...
