Can no longer ask Google questions via Bluetooth in car? 0 Recommended Answers 36 Replies 122 Upvotes

Hi,
I used to be able to ask the Google Assistant questions (like what's the weather or what's the traffic on my way to work) from my car's Bluetooth, but it recently stopped working. I press the Bluetooth button (on the steering wheel) which activates the Google Assistant and it makes the normal bing noise indicating the phone is waiting for verbal input. I ask a question and then nothing happens, almost like it doesn't hear anything. After a few seconds (much quicker than normal) it makes the second "timeout" bing noise. The strange thing is, some functions still work - like I can dictate text messages or ask Google to read my text messages, or I can have it save a reminder, or make a call, all via the button in the car over Bluetooth. So the core assistant functions continue to work but for more general questions there's no response? I'm using a Samsung S6 (yes, I need a new phone) and the car is a BMW. Has anyone else noticed a similar issue? I would say this stopped working after an update to the app maybe 2-4 weeks ago.

Same thing is happening to me.  I have a 2018 BMW and a Galaxy S8. I've tried resetting the google app back to the factory provided version and still doesn't work.

Steve, since you described having a Samsung device, can you disable Bixby on your phone, if equipped?

Thanks, I just tried that, it didn't resolve the issue.

But I tried something else, using the feature while listening to bluetooth streaming audio.  After pressing the button and asking a question like "what's the weather", the car makes the same sound like the connection has dropped, however I do get a response.  But this only works while using bluetooth audio.  If I have the radio on I just immediately get the disconnected sound but without a response from google.

Glad to see others are having the same issue and it's not just my phone. As an update, I find that this problem comes and goes. About three weeks ago there was a Google app update and the problem went away - I was able to use the Google assistant via the button in my BMW and it worked for all queries. Then a week later, another Google app update and the problem is back :(

Weird thing is this works over Bluetooth in the wife's Mazda CX9 but does not with my M3. If I use the onboard passthrough button, it works but if I trigger it via "OK google" it doesn't. The passthrough works for things like sending SMS, but if you ask it for weather for example, the voice stops. The passthrough also uses the car's voice, not the Assistant voice.

In looking for a workaround, I installed Android Auto, and the BMW integration is working again.  I don't have to launch AA, I just followed the installation prompts to install and configure it.  I'm not sure if it just randomly working again or if installing AA changed a permission or setting somewhere, but I'm happy that its working again.

It works but I have to keep the app running. If I don't run Android Auto, then it doesn't work. Looks like Google Assistant is not routing audio through the correct channels it looks like.

It's not working again and does seem to be random.  Does anyone know if the feature works for iPhones?
