Google Assistant is Turned OFF. I don't want to turn it on.
Problem: When I hold the play button on my headphones, google assistant creates a notification showing how to turn itself on. If I ignore this prompt and later on press and hold the play button again Google Assistant Suggests (with a voice) that when it is safe, I should turn on Google Assistant.
I don't want google assistant to do anything when I press and hold the play button. It is giving me cancer and I want to kill myself when I hear it.

Ok, I figured out how to turn Google Ass-istant off on a Nexus 5 and keep it from repeatedly asking to be turned on again. There are two series of steps. >> indicates a press or scroll down the page (it's like the adventure game of Myst) Your phone may be different so play around to get where you need to go: Open the Google App on your phone. >> Settings >> Google Assistant >> Assistant >> Assistant devices >> Phone >> Google Assistant (turn off).
The behavior of the settings gear you find along the way is different based on the current screen. When in doubt, you can click on the three line menu, or the ... menu to see if additional options are available.
Now, it will still nag you mercilessly to turn on the Google Assistant when you turn on the phone. Go to Settings >> Apps >> Settings gear on top right >> Default Apps >> Assist and Voice Input >> Assist App >> Choose Assist App (none). That will stop the nag.
As you can see from the complexity of finding these settings, Google desperately does NOT want you to turn off the Assistant as it feeds its search engine with everything you say to help their ad personalization. By the way, you may also want to turn off the permission to Google to use your microphone. That is at Settings >> Apps >> Google >> Permissions >> Microphone. Test it by saying: "OK Google"

Me too, except it has nothing to do with headphones. I want Google Assistant to be available when I *want* it, and otherwise stay out of my way. Every time I open my phone, I get a "reminder" to turn on Google Assistant. So I finally set the thing up and turned it on... only to find that now it doesn't just show me a reminder, it actually takes over the screen and starts listening for input, forcing me to actively CLOSE it in order to do anything else. So I turned it off again. But rather than just going away, now it's gone back to "reminding" me to turn it on again.
Please just put it into a handy icon, so I can use it with a single tap. (And please STOP making me tap EVERY DAMN TIME I OPEN MY PHONE to make it go away.)
If anyone knows how to stop this annoying behavior, please post!

Amen to that. I've had the exact same experience and find it incredibly intrusive in my life. It's a waste of my time which is incredibly valuable and I I am half tempted to move over to an iPhone just to get rid of Google.

No response from Google? That's a shame, considering buying and iPhone, Google is absurdly intrusive. Google assistant is a failure.

Hi all,
This has been escalated to the Assistant community manager. There are other reports of this with the main topic. I can't currently duplicate this to that one so I'd suggest you follow along there when updates become available, just to make things easier.

I turned off Google Assistant AND set assistant in assist.app to None, and I STILL get the damn assistant asking to be turned on when I activate my Hearall SA-40, which is an assistant device for hearing impaired people that helps us make and hear phone calls on a cell phone. It connects by bluetooth and the assistant pops up when I press the button on the Hearall to connect to the phone begin a call. Then when I touch the screen to dismiss the assistant request, the Hearall disconnects. Bottom line, I cannot use my Hearall to make a phone call. Very annoying for a person with a disability that this app interferes with a device that is supposed to be assistive. Thing is this didn't start happening until recently and I have no idea what started it.
Update: I think I've solved the problem for me, for now. I went to Settings > Google and clicked DISABLE. It's too bad Google has to be completely disabled or removed due to this issue. I would have liked to use the Assistant for other things, if only it could have been turned off only for my bluetooth device. There are other assistants out there though. Maybe a different one will work better.
