Google Assistant can't hear me when playing any audio on my phone 0 Recommended Answers 38 Replies 159 Upvotes

When playing any audio, be it music, YouTube videos, podcasts, etc, google assistant doesn't seem able to hear my commands.  For example, I can tell it "Play Spotify" and music will start playing.  However now if I say, "Ok google, pause music" or "Ok google, next song"  It will not respond at all.  I have to turn the volume almost all the way down and then it will only sometimes hear me, if I yell right into the microphone.  I've cleared the cache, data, reinstalled google, and retrained my voice.  My OS is updated to the newest version.   I have a galaxy s9.  I don't have problems with it hearing me and responding otherwise. For instance I can tell google to skip songs while playback is already paused.  Anyone have any ideas to help with this?

Hey Zach

If you’re in a loud area, turn off background noise or go somewhere quieter.

I am not in a loud area. I am listening to music on my phone and cannot get my phone to hear me give commands to Google. I'm not playing through external speakers, just the ones on my phone. I should be able to give commands without lowering the volume.  Even lowering the volume doesn't help much unless it's turned all the way down. That's why Google assistant has the commands to pause or skip songs/ podcasts etc. . I can do that on Google home, seen other Android phones do that, and have been able to do it with siri on ios devices.

It's clear that James did not even read the original post, which is frustrating.

To rephrase the problem (I have it also on Pixel 2): Google Assistant can't hear me say "okay Google" while any audio is playing out of the phone's speakers, because the sound from the speakers which are right next to the microphones is so loud by comparison that it renders the microphones essentially useless.

Is this the expected behavior, or is this a bug? In other words, are the microphones supposed to account for audio that's being emitted from the speakers?

Same issue with Galaxy Note 9.  I used a hack by using Bixby also and that does hear me over music,  but it dosen't always know music is playing.

Thank you Joshua, for stating it so clearly.  I'm going to be super annoyed if this is just how it is supposed to be because I just left ios for Android for the first time and one of my most used features was using my voice to control siri while I drove or did some other activity in which my hands weren't free.  But at least I'll know that's just how it is.  But if there's something wrong with my hardware I'd sure like to know so I can get it replaced (assuming I can still even do that) And thanks Dan for the idea about using Bixby.  Bixby is working fine for you with audio coming out of your speakers?

So far I have not found a fix that works. I feel like every now and then in decides to work but other times it does not. It seems to work just fine when I am connected to my car or another Bluetooth speaker but not when the phone is just playing on its own. I have noticed that Bixby will hear me and change songs if I meet to. It is not perfect but at least I won't be returning the phone since technically I can get it to work.  I have tried the suggestions above but they do not appear to work long term. I have not tried contacting AT&T know. I suspect that this is a software issue.
