Google Assistant can't add items to shopping lists

This issue started at least a few weeks ago.

I have multiple lists on https://shoppinglist.google.com/. Usually, I can ask the Google Assistant to add an item to a specific list and it will Just Do It™. At some point, however, it stopped working. Now, when I ask Google Assistant to add an item to a list, it'll say "Item added to list SHOPPING". I do have a list called "Shopping", but it responds this way no matter which list I asked it to add the item to. Not only that, but it doesn't add the item to any of my lists.

If I am using Google Assistant's text input to ask it to add an item to a shopping list, the "View List" link it provides either takes me to an error page ("Can't load page."; this happens on my phone) or takes me to https://www.google.com/ (this happens on my Chromebook).

This issue is occurring on my Chromebook, my Android phone, and all of my Home/Mini/Nest speakers.

Things I've tried:
  • Confirmed that Google Assistant is set up to use Google Shopping List for lists
  • Confirmed my speaker or device is powered on correctly
  • Confirmed my speaker or device is connected to my Wi-Fi network
  • Confirmed that Google Assistant is using the correct Google account
  • Cleared Google Assistant's cache

I am having this exact same issue!! It is SO frustrating bc this is one of the main ways we use our smart speaker. Will follow for updates 🥺

Thanks for taking the time to create this thorough write up. You described it perfectly, but I didn't want to take the time to describe in detail.

I observed something that can serve as assistance to developers in figuring out the problem, and a temporary workaround to users.
If you create a new note in Google Keep and make sure it has checkboxes enabled (meaning, a list note) and title it SHOPPING in all caps (does not work if it's not all caps), and then ask Google Assistant to add an item to your shopping list, that item is added to this note as a new list item.

It seems like Google Assistant is always trying to add items to the Google Keep list note titled SHOPPING in all caps, and if one does not exist, it just stops trying to find where to add the item to, but still reports success in adding the item to that list (whether it exists or not).

Side note, the items added are all lower case, which I find weird.
