Using voice to text, I try and send a text message such as "what would you like for dinner baby" but Assistant has started inserting unwanted punctuation, as in "what would you like for dinner, baby". In some cases it will add multiple incorrect punctuations. I was happy to ask for punctuation when required. Can auto punctuation be disabled somehow?

I have a similar issue. I used to say. And it would insert a. No I say. And it seems to insert the word "period" after briefly showing a.

This is driving me absolutely crazy. It puts punctuation right in the middle of random sentences for me. Super annoying. It's more of a hindrance than a help.

Did you mean to reply to someone else maybe? The weird text punctuation comes through gboard's voice to text
marked this as an answer
Dear Google, please allow us to shut off the auto punctuation feature in the Google Voice Assistant. It is annoying.

Thank you Google for breaking everything.

This is super annoying. I get capitalization in the middle of sentences, and it puts in periods when I take a breath to go on in a longer sentence.

How do we disable punctuation feature?
marked this as an answer
I have been researching this for hours and found out pretty definitively that at this time, you cannot disable the auto punctuation in voice text. Gotta say this is a big fail for Google. I've heard from nobody that likes this feature. And from my testing, it doesn't work. That last sentence alone is an example of the most frustrating glitch. It ends your sentence, and starts another with the word and. I'd think the first tenet of a grammar feature would be the biggest no no...starting a sentence with AND or BUT. Guess not. Come on, Google!

Yeah, I just noticed that happening this morning. You can probably tell from the way this is typed. I didn't put any of this punctuation in here. It's ridiculous. I don't want this stuff on here anymore. How do we turn it off?
marked this as an answer
Used to LOVE using voice to text for texting. Now I end up with a whole bunch of separate little sentences that sound as if they came from a child. Searched high and low and no way to turn it off. Does anyone know how to contact Google via email to bitch about this? All I can find is community support. Totally sucks. You RUINED A WORKING SYSTEM...

This so called feature is a ridiculous failure. You would think somebody would have tested it before roll out. How do I deactivate it?

I'm going to leave this text exactly as it is written, not as I verbalize it. Just so everybody can see what mine is doing. It's terrible. And using words that I did not say sometimes comes out to be downright lewd.

My big question is why did this just change? In the last probably 2 weeks.

So, this is really interesting. This text Turned out to have fewer mistakes. Turn on all of the other ones I've been doing. Over the past two weeks. Forget that statement. Look at the two sentences prior to this one. Gibberish.

Same this is quite annoying. Doesn't look like there's a way to disable it, but there should be

This is actually realted to the keyboard you are using, not the operating system. What device and keyboard are all of oyu using?

I'm using a Galaxy s7 and have tried google keyboard and samsung keyboard to no avail with this stupid google assistant voice screw up

Oh it's absolutely awful!

I would hope by the end of this disastrous day that this will either be gone or fixed. Gone is fine!

It's possible that if we turn off Google Assistant all together it may solve this (yes I know that is not ideal). It may be the lesser of the two evils depending on your personal user habits. I know I talk to text a lot more that I request anything from the assistant. I'm speculating and don't know that this would for sure work but it does say it's a Google assistant "upgrade"

Turning off Google Assistant has no impact. I have Google Assistant disabled on my phone, and I still have this incredibly annoying auto punctuation feature ruining nearly every message I try to dictate. This needs to go.

Which is an exact reason why its not the Assistant causing this
marked this as an answer
@ScottG_TC this has nothing to do with the 'keyboard' I am using. I use Swiftkey for keyboard input on my Android device, and I use Google's voice recognition feature for speech-to-text.
marked this as an answer
@ScottG_TC I am not claiming it's the assistant, I'm saying it's Google voice typing that is the problem. Is your focus really that narrow as a product support specialist that you can't gather that information from these complaints?

I posted on a separate complaint about Google voice typing, and the support specialist there redirected me to THIS thread about Voice Assistant. So please, get your support strategies in place before telling us what you think we're talking about.

Well this is the community for Google Assistant. You do know that this is a user to user forum adn we are volunteers and we specialize in different aspects of google products. That is why there are different forums for different products.

+1 for the dislike of Auto-punctuation in Voice-to-text (Google Assistant), and +1 for frustration with the inability to disable it.

The auto-punctuation came into effect without any notice, without any desire to have it, and without the ability to disable/configure it; exceptionally terrible user-experience, Google…

I'm getting periods inserted all over the place. William Shatner. Wouldn't have a chance to use this coherently

Thank you Benjamin for discerning the lack of assistant as the problem. This is clearly a massive problem. So if you are just a volunteer Scott, can you at least express to the higher UPS how this is almost 100% disliked?.... Hated is probably more accurate.

"This is actually realted to the keyboard you are using, not the operating system. What device and keyboard are all of oyu using?"

@ScottG_TC I might be totally wrong, but when I open the "voice typing" settings in gboard, it literally opens the voice settings in the Google assistant app. It seems like these services and features are more tightly coupled than you may think.

Absolutely HATE this feature with a passion! Sitting there having to remove all of the stupid little periods and punctuation put in the wrong places. Had me almost running into a wall. Today

I think it's the dumbest feature that has ever been introduced!

This random punctuation just started. For me a couple of days ago. You can see. That when I pause my sentence. It does it. I absolutely hate it. I need to disable it. But don't know how. Help!

I was also redirected to this thread. And this problem started. For me about 48 hours ago. I have tried using four different. Keyboards And I still have the same issue. As you can plainly see you. Do we have an ETA yet for a fix?
marked this as an answer
I hate this. Just started for me in the past week. Stop it Google! It doesn't work. From here on I will. Show you. These sentences are using speech to text. If you notice above, there's a. Where it shouldn't be? And the sentence that I just said Is a perfect example of why your system is broken?
marked this as an answer
Yes, this is a Google problem and I don't know if Google is aware or has concern as of yet.
marked this as an answer
I agree. Entirely. The feature does not work and they should have a way to disable it.

I just uninstalled the last Google update and it is back to the way it was. I had another issue where my voice texting no longer worked UNLESS I turned OFF the "Ok Google" function. If I did the voice text input worked fine, otherwise it did not work. Since I uninstalled the update they both work properly and no more "Auto Punctuation". I also changed my auto-updates off.

It's so frustrating, if you pause to take a breath, or need to think on your next words, then boom it adds punctuation that makes no sense at all. Why did anyone think this was a good idea? Most of us know how to say "period" or "question mark" at the end of a sentence, so we don't need this... I don't understand how this is not optional but instead forced on us, and in such a broken state, all because the minority don't understand how to use punctuation with voice recognition.

Don't punish the majority to help the minority. Make that crap OPTIONAL!!!

Unfortunately, it is definitely not ready for primetime. Obviously someone with English as a second language. Did the beta testing? Punctuation was not inserted by me. This thread

I talked to several people at Google one and they finally threw up their hands and said there was nothing that anyone could do about this. Some engineer with a brilliant idea has destroyed Google voice to text.

Whoever at Google did this does not need to be fired. They just need a good bitch slap.

Phuck! And I thought my phone's OS was going bonkers. . Figured it would since I had just finished paying off the phone. LOL. Glad to see that is not it. With so many complaints how are they ignoring this and not fixing it? At least go back to whatever the prior program was that was not causing this problem.
marked this as an answer
I'm having the same problem with automatic punctuation. I will keep checking to see when there is a fix.
marked this as an answer
Same problem started two days ago. It makes me want to switch to Apple.
marked this as an answer
I can only say the same thing is happening. To me. Hopefully there is a fix for this because it is driving me freaking insane.

The above text is a prime example.
marked this as an answer
Scott, it IS The Google Assistant causing it there articles all over about this feature being added. Just Google it and you'll even see the Articles from Google about adding it to the assistant. It has nothing to do with the keyboard. In fact, I'm not even using a Google keyboard. I'm using Swift.

I just used Google assistant on my Google home device to send this text to myself and I copied exactly how the text came. As you can see. It's doing the same thing. On my Google home and I do not have any keyboard on my Google home, obviously. So this is most definitely Google Assistant

Everybody needs to post this information that I am dictating. There is a solution. It is working 100% from my phone and there are no more annoying capitalization nor stupid punctuation on any pause. Go to Applications and scroll to Google. Tap on Google then tap on the three dots in the upper right hand corner. Tap uninstall updates. Make sure your Google Play does not update automatically if it does turn this off and do not update Google until there is a fix. This is not my find I found this in another message board that nobody seems to be reading because it's buried 9 hours back into the conversation. Please repost this because it is a fix. If the volunteer says this is not a fix tell him to go push sand. Not trying to be rude but they seem to be.
marked this as an answer
This definitely works though we shouldn't have to do it to make it so.

The uninstall updates was not in the place stated but I found it clicking on the three dots after I was into the Google app.
Then I had to open the Google Play Store and click the three dots and tell it to not install any updates. Which means now I have to install the manually. What a pain. But I'm using voice to text right now and it's working great again.
