Problems with google assistant and contacts on alcatel flip phone

I recently bought an Alcatel fip phone.  I am having trouble making asssistant work properly on it. Here is one particularly annoying problem.
I entered contacts on the new phone.  I did not enter them as SIM contacts.  I now have assistant working to the extent that I can ask it to call some one--but apparently it doesn't see the contacts in the phone.  It is only looking at google contacts. My google contacts include only email addresses.  Is there something I can do to make iot access the phone contacts? I certainly hope so, otherwise this phone has less capability than my old one.

This is working as inteneded. Google assistant only uses Google contacts. Just add those contacts to google contacts and all will work fine.
