Same crap is happening to me and it sucks. When I use assistant, I'm usually in a hurry. Why this seems to be an improvement is beyond me!!! It's the dumbing down of society. I hope you all like it cuz it's just going to get worse. Everyone wanted to change everything and "be heard," "matter," or whatever the ef and now this is just the beginning. It's called SHORT SIGHTED INITIATIVES.

I'm having the same issue on One Plus 7 Pro.

It is MADDENING.

Every single flipping time I ask GoogAss to place a call it asks if I want to use dialer or duo. Obviously since I said call and not 'video call' or 'duo call' I want to make a regular flipping phone call.

To top it off, when I say dialer, it says that there isn't a number for the contact! But, when I click the drop down and choose the same flipping contact, it calls right away. SO INFURIATING.

Same here. It's like navigating through an old-fashioned menu structure just to make a hands-free phone call.

Is it me or did James M just reply with a boilerplate response that doesn't come close to addressing the OP?  Seems like a Bot rather than a real person...

I have the same issue as the OP, but if I respond "Dialer" verbally then it dials "Tyler" from my contacts. I'm frustrated enough to consider uninstalling or disabling WhatsApp until this is fixed, just so my calls will go through directly.

I uninstalled Duo and the problem went away.
Duo will stay uninstalled because Google can't work together between departments and resolve conflicting issues.

This sucks! Made worse because if you don't respond in the proper time it won't make the call.

Has anyone else noticed if you click on the phone option it says it can't find the contact?

It's horrible, I used this feature AAAAA LOT and I cannot use it any more. Assistant keeps asking Dialer or Whatsapp and whatever I answer - it does not work. :( I think the assistang got really drunk or is completely stoned. :))) I want the old assistant back!!!

I've shared this with the Google Assistant community team for review. That doesn't guarantee a response but just wanted to let you know your issue has been shared.

Maybe share it with the duo team as well. I've uninstalled duo until this issue is resolved, I'm sure they'd like to know that a failure of one teams product may hurt theirs as well

Why isn't it asking for mobile or whatsapp? Why dialer? What is dialer? Is it landline or mobile or work or home or what? Haven't seen a dialer since the 1980s!!  We've been using a keypad.

Hi,

I tried this on my Pixel 4A just now. I did not get any prompt to pick dialer. I have WhatsApp and SIgnal installed.

Can you tell me what's the command that you are using to initiate this? (Steps to reproduce)

Same problem on the pixel2 xl. Super annoying. I make many calls while driving. Now impossible with it not finding any of my contacts. Assistant went from useful, to less useful, to mostly useless, to completely useless.  Deleted duo.. no change. Deleted whatsapp and it solved the issue, but kinda would like to use whatsapp.

I am using the beta version of the Google app. Can someone try switching to the Beta for the Google app and see if it is happening? Other than that, I think everything is the same on my phone too. I am on Pixel 4A with the latest security update and the latest version of WhatsApp.

This is so unbelievably annoying!  Google has totally broken voice dialing using Assistant.  I am one of those suffering the double whammy: the choice-of-apo question, and then failure.  First Google asks if I want to use Dialer, Duo or Whatsapp.  Then about half the time, after I say Dialer, it says there is no phone number for that contact.  Of course, when I open Contacts, that person indeed has a phone number.  Every time.  WTF?

Oh, and Assistant generally sucks now when trying to use a headset and keep the phone in your pocket.  It is constantly telling me I have to unlock my device to complete the action (like send a text, etc.), and then even when I do so it forgets what it I asked it to do in the first place.  Makes me long for Siri...

@James M., here is the info you requested:
Android Version:
     Android version : R(Android 11)
     Build Number : N975USQS5EUA1
     Release Date : 2021-02-19
     Security patch level : 2021-02-01
Google App Version: 12.6.13.23.arm64
Device Model Details: Samsung Galaxy Note 10+
Country: USA
Language: English

And by the way @James M., your instructions for gathering the information you requested are all wrong.  The steps you link to don't work on my phone in the system, the Google app, Assistant, etc.  And to make it worse, Android no longer copies things like the build number when you press on them, so you have to manually type them!  Android just keeps getting worse.  Who comes up with these new "features"?

Relevant Answer
I simply use the verbal command "call" followed by the name of the contact I wished to call. That is when it asks dialer or Whatsapp. I have since removed WhatsApp to avoid the problem further.

Disan,

You should be the one switching to the platform we have to see if the issue is real. Obviously, if you're not having the issue on the Beta then what good would us having the issue prove to you?

Perhaps provide instructions to switch to Beta. We are not all product experts.

Extremely frustrating that in today's competition for voice assistants, Google has fallen short on an update and has yet to fix the issue.

Alexa might be getting their shot on my device soon. Unfortunately, that is going to take some help as well since when tried this, it wouldn't pick up my request outside of the app.

Amazon Fire Phone might have an opportunity here.

I'm Pixel 3a, Android V11, updated Feb 1.
At some time in the last 10 days,  my google assistant started responding to my voice commands to dial a contact by asking me which dialer do I want to use - it displays the phone app and WhatsAp as choices. Even if I choose the phone app it can't find any of my contacts without me manually scrolling for them.

I deleted WhatsAp and Duo from my phone - no change.

Must be handled in the back-end servers that process the Google Assistant requests?  Fixed there perhaps?

Same here. As mysteriously as it showed up, it quietly disappeared and started working normal again.

Thanks everyone who also chimed in and sent in the complaint. I wish they'd tell us why and what happened. But it works fine now which is most important.

Yes, mine resolved itself 2 days ago.  To my knowledge, there were no software updates downloaded to the phone, so it must have been a server-side fix.
