Allow others to make calls to your household contacts

You can let other people call selected household contacts from your speakers or Smart Display. After you set up household contacts, anyone with access to your devices can call them. Learn more about what happens when you set up household contacts.

Important: This feature is available on some speakers and Smart Displays in English and in the US. 

Step 1: Set up your device to make calls

Before you start, make sure your device is set up to make audio and video calls.

Important: Only the person who set up the home in the Google Home app can set up household contacts.

Step 2: Set up household contacts

You can set up household contacts from your speaker, Smart Display, or Google Home app.

Household contacts created from your device contacts will be added to Google Contacts. Google contacts are available across Google services and can be managed on any signed-in device.

With your Smart Display

1. Say "Hey Google, set up household contacts."
2. Select the people you want to add to your household contacts.
   • If someone is not listed, tap Can't find someone? and follow the on-screen instructions.
   • To allow guests to call you, add yourself to household contacts.
3. Tap Done.

With your speaker

Important: You must have the Google Assistant app on your phone to get the setup notification.  

1. Say "Hey Google, set up household contacts." You'll get a notification on your phone.
2. Tap the notification and follow the on-screen instructions.

In the Google Home app 

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial  Assistant settings.
3. Tap You  Your people.
4. Tap the person you want to add to your household contacts.
   • If the person isn't listed, tap Add Person and follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Turn on Household contact.
6. Tap Save.

Optional: Set up nicknames to household contacts

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial  Assistant settings.
3. Tap You  Your people.
4. Tap the person you want to add a nickname for.
5. Enter the nickname.
6. Tap Save.

Step 3: Call household contacts

Important: Calls to the person who set up household contacts might not go through. This depends on whether the carrier supports calls to the same number that makes the call.

To make a call, you can:

• Say "Hey Google, call [name]" or if you set up a nickname for the contact, "Hey Google, call [nickname]."
• Go to the "Household contacts" card on your Smart Display and tap Call  or Video call . To find all calling options, tap the person's name.

Fix calls that go to voicemail 

Sometimes your calls to household contacts can show up as coming from an unknown caller. 

If you call a household contact with a carrier or mobile setting that blocks calls from unknown numbers, your call can go to voicemail. To prevent this, the person you want to call will need to update their settings to allow calls from unknown numbers.

Manage household contacts 

Add a household contact

To add a household contact, say "Hey Google, add [name] to household contacts," or add household contacts from your Google Home app or Smart Display.

In the Google Home app 

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial  Assistant settings.
3. Tap You  Your people.
4. Tap the person you want to add to your household contacts.
   • If the person isn't listed, tap Add Person and follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Turn on Household contact.
6. Tap Save.

On your Smart Display

1. On the "Household contacts" card, tap Add household contacts. If you don't find this option, at the top of your card, tap More .
2. Select the people you want to add to your household contacts.
3. Tap Done.

Remove a household contact 

To remove a household contact, say "Hey Google, remove household contact." You can also remove household contacts from your Google Home app or Smart Display.

Deleting a household contact will not delete that household contact from your Google Contacts.

In the Google Home app 

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial  Assistant settings.
3. Tap You  Your people.
4. Tap the person you want to remove from your household contacts.
5. Turn off Household contact.
6. Tap Save.

On your Smart Display

1. On the "Household contacts" card, tap the person you want to remove.
2. At the bottom right, tap Remove.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

When you set up household contacts 

• Household contacts are available on all supported devices linked to the home that you set up.
• When anyone makes a call to one of your household contacts, you’ll show up as the caller and it’ll be saved to your My Activity. Learn how to view & control activity in your account.
• Anyone with access to your Smart Display can view and call your household contacts. They can also see contact details such as the phone number.
• Children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) who have a Google Account and Voice Match set up won’t be able to make calls with Google Duo.
