Turn off info sharing on non-Android TV devices

Some 2018 and newer LG TVs with Google Assistant don't use the Android TV operating system. If a TV or set-top box has the Google Assistant built in, you’ll see it on the packaging.

On these TVs, Google and the device manufacturer need your permission to share info to allow the Google Assistant and your device’s voice services to work.

On TVs that don't run the Android TV operating system, available languages vary. On LG TVs, the Google Assistant is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish. On all other TVs, the Google Assistant is only available in English.

  1. On your TV remote, press the microphone.
  2. Say “Disable information sharing.”

Turn info sharing back on

  1. On your TV remote, press the microphone.
  2. Ask a question or say a command.
  3. Read and agree to the info sharing terms.

How info sharing works

How info is shared

  • Anything you say while pressing the microphone on your device remote is shared with Google.
  • Google does a speech-to-text translation of what you say and gives the transcribed text to your device manufacturer.
  • Depending on what you say, either the device manufacturer or Google will respond. Whichever partner doesn’t respond deletes what you say from its logs within 30 days.
  • If Google responds to you, Google's use of your info is controlled by Google's terms of service and privacy policy.
  • Any personal info that Google shares with your device manufacturer may not be used by the device manufacturer for any other purposes, including advertising or building user profiles.

What info is shared

Google and the device manufacturer share info like:

  • Device name
  • Zip code
  • Location
  • Device settings
  • Device ID

After you link your Google Account to the device, your device manufacturer will also have access to limited personal info, like:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Profile URL and photo, if you have a Google+ profile
  • Language preferences

During a conversation, Google and the device manufacturer may use what you said and content on your screen to create a better response.

For example, if you ask “Who is Barack Obama?” and then ask “How tall is he?” Google and the device manufacturer can use the first question to give you a better answer to your second question.
