Get the Google Assistant on Android TV

You can ask questions and get things done with the help of your Google Assistant on Android TV.

The Google Assistant is available in English on Android TV. More languages are coming soon.

What you need

  • An Android TV with: 
    • Google Assistant built in
    • Language set to U.S. English
  • TV with HDMI ports
  • HDMI cable
  • A Google Account
  • Wi-Fi connection

Get started

Step 1: Check for a system update

  1. At the bottom of your Android TV’s Home screen, go to Settings and then About.
  2. Select System upgrade and then Check for upgrade and then Check now.
  3. If your system system needs an update, select Download. If you don’t need an update, you’ll see "Your system is up to date."

Step 2: Set up your Google Assistant

  1. On your remote, press the microphone.
  2. An introduction to your Google Assistant should appear. Follow the steps to continue.

Step 3: Talk with your Google Assistant

  1. On your remote, press the microphone.
  2. Say a command or ask a question. Here are examples of what you can ask.

On Nvidia Shield TVs, you can also talk with your Assistant by saying "Ok Google" to your game controller. Learn how to set up "Ok Google" on your controller.
