Set up the Google Assistant on your speaker or Smart Display

You can ask questions and get things done with the help of the Google Assistant on your speaker or Smart Display. 

Not all Google Assistant devices work the same. For device-specific instructions, contact your manufacturer.

Languages you can use

On speakers, the Google Assistant is available in Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, and Swedish. More languages are coming soon.

Note: On Smart Displays, the Google Assistant is available in English, French, French (Canada), and German.


Getting started with the Google Assistant on smart speakers

What you need

  • A speaker or Smart Display with the Google Assistant built in
  • Google Home app Google Home version 2.3 or higher
  • Google app Google Search version 8.10 or higher
  • A Google Account
  • A mobile phone or tablet that:
    • Has Android 4.2 or higher
    • Has its language set to an option listed above
    • Works with a 5GHz Wi-Fi network (a WPA2-Enterprise network won’t work)
    • Has Bluetooth turned on
  • An internet connection and secure wireless network
  • For Smart Displays: If you already use Duo for video calling, make sure Duo is signed in with the same Google Account as your Smart Display

Get started

  1. Plug in your speakers or Smart Display.
  2. Connect your mobile device to the Wi-Fi network that you’ll use for your Google Assistant speaker or Smart Display.
  3. Get the latest version of the Google Home app and Google app:
    • Go to the Google Home app page, then tap Install or Update (whichever option appears). If you see "Installed," you already have the latest version.
    • Go to the Google app page, then follow the same steps.
  4. Make sure your device has Android 5.0 or higher. Learn how to check and update your Android version.
  5. On your phone or tablet,, open the Google Home app Google Home. Follow the steps.
    • If you don’t see the steps to set up your speaker: At the top right of the app’s Home screen, tap Devices Devices and then Add new device and then follow the steps.

Fix issues during set up

Can’t see speaker or Smart Display in the Google Home app

Restart your device
  1. Unplug your device. Wait 10 seconds.
  2. Plug it back in.
Restart the Home app
  1. Close the Home app Google Home. Learn how to close apps.
  2. Open the Home app Google Home.

Setup freezes or can’t finish

Restart your device
  1. Unplug your device. Wait 10 seconds.
  2. Plug it back in.
Factory reset your device (Smart Displays only)

On the top of your Smart Display, press and hold the volume up and volume down buttons for 20 seconds.

Your device will restart the setup process.
