Read web pages or use a screen reader

On your Android phone or tablet, you can ask your Google Assistant to read web pages out loud.

Important: You can’t create new Family Notes, but you can still view and save existing notes.

What you need

• Android 5.0 or above
• The Assistant language set to "English"
• The Google app, version 10.96 or above

Ask your Google Assistant to read a web page out loud

1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to a web page with Google Chrome , the Google app , or the Google News app .
2. Say "Hey Google," then say a command. For example:
   • "Read this page."
   • "Read it."
   • "Read aloud."

Make your Smart Display or Smart Clock more accessible

You can customize your Smart Display or Smart Clock with accessibility settings.

Important: The languages you can use depend on the device. Learn which languages work on your device.

Change accessibility settings

Important: Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your device.

1. Open the Google Home app .
2. At the bottom, tap Home .
3. Touch and hold your device.
4. At the top right, tap Device settings Accessibility.
5. Choose which settings you want to turn on or off.

Visual options

• Color correction: Your screen will change text and display settings.
• Color inversion: Your screen colors will be reversed. For example, dark text on a white screen becomes white text on a dark screen.
• Magnify screen: You can triple tap your screen to zoom in and make everything bigger.
  • Move across the screen by dragging 2 or more fingers.
  • Change the zoom level by pinching your fingers together or spreading them apart.
  • Temporarily magnify the screen by triple tapping and holding. To stop, lift your finger.
• Closed captioning: You can find captions for the Google Assistant’s voice or video content. You can change the font type, size, and color.
  Tip: Video captions only work with videos that have closed captioning.
• High contrast text: Your text color will change to black or white, depending on the original text color.
  Tip: High contrast text is an experimental feature, so it might not work correctly everywhere on your device.

Audio options

• Play start sound: You can hear a sound when your device hears "Ok Google" or "Hey Google."
• Play end sound: You can hear a sound when your device is done listening to your request.
• Audio descriptions: You can hear a description of what’s happening in a video.
  Tip: This works with videos that provide audio description.
• Screen reader: Your device will provide speech feedback when you tap the screen.
  Tip: The screen reader changes how your touchscreen and gestures work.

Use TalkBack gestures

When you turn on the Screen reader, you can use TalkBack gestures to navigate the screen and understand what’s on it.

Learn what's on the screen

• Explore items on the screen: Move one finger along the screen. The item under your finger will be highlighted and read.
• Open a selected item: Double tap with one finger.
• Select the next item and read it: Swipe from left to right with one finger.
• Select the previous item and read it: Swipe right to left with one finger.
• Open quick settings: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen with 2 fingers.
• Find media controls: Tap the screen with 2 fingers.
• Return to home screen: From the left half of the screen, swipe left with 2 fingers, or say "Hey Google, go to home."
• Return to ambient screen: To find the screen saver, from the left edge of the screen, swipe right with 2 fingers.

Mute your devices

• Silence TalkBack speech: Tap the screen with one finger.
• Silence Google Assistant speech: Tap the screen with 2 fingers.

Change navigation gestures

You can change how you explore the screen. By default, TalkBack navigates by items on the screen. You can change it so it uses character, word, line, paragraph, heading, link, or control instead.

1. To choose how you want to navigate, swipe up or down.
2. To navigate, swipe left and right.
3. To use the default navigation, swipe up or down.
4. Select Default.

Change Talkback settings

1. Swipe down and then right in a single gesture.
2. Place a finger on "TalkBack settings." You can also swipe left or right on it.
3. To open an item, double tap it.
4. To exit, swipe down then left in a single gesture.
