Create & manage your family with Google Assistant

When you create a family group, you become the family manager. You can create a family group with up to 6 people when you:

Important: A family group is different from a Google Home group, which helps you manage your home and devices in the Google Home app. You can add someone as both a family member and a home member. Learn how to share a home and devices in the Google Home app.

To create and manage a family group with a speaker or Smart Display:

Create a family group

You can create a family from your speaker, Smart Display, or mobile device with Google Assistant.

  1. Say, “Hey Google, set up my family.”
    • If you ask on a speaker, you get a notification from Google Assistant on your mobile device. Tap that notification.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip: If you get an error when you create a family, learn how to fix it.

Manage your family members

You can manage your family members from your speaker, Smart Display, or mobile device with Google Assistant.

Check who’s in your family

With a speaker or Smart Display

  1. Say “Hey Google, who’s in my family?”
  2. When you ask on a speaker, you get a notification from Google Assistant on your mobile device. Tap that notification.

In the Google Assistant app

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Tap You and then Your people.
    • If someone is in your family on Google, below their name, you’ll find “Family group.”
Add family members

With a speaker or Smart Display

  1. Say “Hey Google, add a family member.”
    • When you ask on a speaker, you get a notification from Google Assistant on your mobile device. Tap that notification.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

In the Google Assistant app

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Tap You and then Your people and then Add person.
  3. Choose the contact you want to add.
  4. Turn on Family group.
  5. Confirm their email address and tap Use this email and then Save.
Tip: If you get an error when you try to add a family member, learn how to fix it.
Remove family members

With a speaker or Smart Display

  1. Say “Hey Google, remove a family member.”
  2. On your Android phone or tablet, you get a notification from Google Assistant. Tap that notification.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

In the Google Assistant app

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Tap You and then Your people.
  3. Tap the name of the family member you want to remove.
  4. Turn off Family group.
  5. At the bottom right, tap Save.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
What happens when you remove someone from your family group
  • The person you remove from your family group:
    • Keeps their Google Account and any content on their device purchased with the family payment method.
    • Can't make new purchases with the family payment method, or access any services your family group shares.
    • Gets an email alert when they're removed.
    • Loses access to anything in your Family Library.
    • Loses access to your shared storage if your family shares a Google One membership. 
    • Loses access to extra member benefits and Google experts.
  • If the person you remove:
    • Made a purchase with the family payment method and it’s already in process: You'll still be charged, but you can request a refund for unwanted or accidental purchases.
    • Added content to the Family Library: If you set up Google Play Family Library, any content they added is removed and other family members lose access to that content.
    • Is 13 (or the applicable age in your country) or older, and you and your child choose to manage their account with Family Link: Their Google Account and any devices are no longer supervised when you remove them from the family group.

With a mobile or web browser

  1. Go to Your family on Google.
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Delete family group.

In the Google Assistant app

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Tap You and then Your people.
  3. Below “Your family on Google,” tap families.google.com.
  4. At the top right, tap Menu Menu and then Delete family group.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
What happens when you delete your family group
  • Everyone from your family group keeps their Google Accounts and any content on their device they purchased with the family payment method.
  • If your family members made a purchase with the family payment method and it's already in process, you'll still be charged, but you can request a refund for unwanted or accidental purchases.
  • If you set up Google Play Family Library, everyone from your family group loses access to the Family Library content that other family members added.
  • If you subscribed to a family plan like YouTube Music or Google One, your family loses access to that service.
  • If your family shares a Google One membership, your family loses access to the shared storage. 
    • If your family members run out of storage, their files stay safe but they can't store new things. Learn what happens when they run out of space.
    • Everyone from your family loses access to extra member benefits and Google experts.
  • If a family member is 13 (or the applicable age in your country) or older, and you choose to manage their account with Family Link, their Google Account and any devices are no longer supervised when you remove them from the family group.
  • If you delete your family group, you can only create or join another family group once in the next 12 months.
