Grouping

Group

Grouping allows the user to visually aggregate/group data together. When you’re in the standard “Grid” layout, you can group on columns of type "Text", "Number", "Date", “Dropdown”, “Person”, and more!

When you configure a grouping, it will introduce new header rows that group the rows by the different values in the table: for a “Dropdown” it will show a header row for each option, and for “Person” type columns it will group rows by person. When rows are grouped together, you can drag 'n' drop rows to reorder them, even between groups!

Known limitations

  • When grouping on non-editable column types, like "Creator", "Updater", "Create/Update time", etc. you will not be able to move rows between groups, since those metadata values are not modifiable.
  • When grouping on linked columns that depend on a relationship, you can group via two methods:

    1. Group on the linked rows from the linked table.
This will group on the actual linked row. For example: let's say you have a table of Projects, which has a relationship to link rows in Projects to rows in a Teams table. A project may be linked to two different teams, but maybe both teams are part of the same larger organization. Grouping on the linked rows would show all the projects grouped by the specific team they are linked to.

    2. Group on the linked columns values.
This will group solely based on the raw cell values in the selected linked column. For example: let's say you have the same table of Projects link to Teams (as the above example), and both the Team Name and Team Org are Lookup columns in the Projects table. Grouping on the linked column "Team Org" will group all the projects that have the same value in the "Team Org" column, so you can see all projects grouped by the org.  When grouping on the linked column values (rather than grouping on linked rows), you will not be able to reorder rows across groups. This is because it can be indeterminate which row to link to when you move from one group to the other (if there are multiple teams with the same org).
