Bot action: Add row to table

How does the "Add row to table" work?

The “add row to table” bot action lets you set up a connection between the two tables that allows your current table to add a new row into the target table.

Selecting the target table

In the bot config, you can select the table you want to add the row to:

  • The target table can be the current table, so you will add a new row to the same table.
  • You will only be able to select tables that you have at least edit access to.

Setting values for the new row

In the bot, you can define what values to set for the data in each column for the new row:

  • The editor will list all the available editable columns in the target table, and you can click to set the value to the right of the column name.
  • When you click on a particular column, a menu will show with several options:
    1. Column value: you can manually select a value for the column, for text you can enter text, for dropdowns you can select one of the dropdown options for the column.
    2. Template value (non-linked columns only): you can use variables to insert column values or metadata, to do things like pass on information from the current row (copy over the customer name into the other table).
    3. Set to this row (linked columns only): if the other table has a relationship linked to the current table, then you can set the linked row to point to the current row in this table. As a concrete example, if you have a table of Customers and a table of Orders, and you can set up a bot so that when a new customer is added, then it will add a new row to the Orders table that is linked back to the new customer.

Permissions & security

When you save the bot, it will create a “table-to-table” permission for the current table to have edit access to the target table, and in the bot list summary, it will show the target table name for transparency. Similarly, all editors of the target table will be able to see your current table’s name and owner email address in the table sharing dialog where they can manage permissions.

You can learn more about how to remove a table-to-table permission in this help center article.
