Sometimes, technical issues come up with our lessons. If you’re having technical trouble with a lesson, check below to see if it is a known issue that we are working on.
Lesson plans also contain troubleshooting tips for any known issues in a lesson, so be sure to read through that document before starting.

In Lesson 3 of the Research and Develop a Topic, the onOpen popup (or auto-alert) message is currently not opening when you first open the Google Doc.
When you manually run the script, if the popup message appears, then the code is correct.
For context, after we created the activity and filmed the videos, the AppsScript team felt it might be a security risk for alerts to automatically open on other people's computers, so they've temporarily disabled the function (which is why the code on the video is incorrect). We are working on modifying the activity to get it to work again.
Some people have noted trouble embedding images in this lesson. You may only see the “share link” choice in your spreadsheet, or do not see “embed image” in Google Maps street view.
If so, it's possible your (or your students') Google Maps is set to "Lite" mode. To test this, open Maps and look for the lightning bolt at the bottom right of the screen. If you see it, you are in Lite mode. Click to go to Full mode. This should fix the issue.

There are known issues with Lesson 2 of Create a Budget in Google Sheets. For both messages below, you can also refer to the lesson plan to double-check coding accuracy:
Error Message: “You have exceeded your daily request quota for this API.”
The API protects itself by limiting the number of calls allowed per IP in a given timeframe. This error message means that all of the requests sent during the class exceeded the limit and the API denied further responses. To help ensure that your class does not hit this limit in the future, there are a couple tactics to employ:
- Limit the number of routes each student is calculating
- Limit the number of times each student requests the routes per class period
- Get a key that relaxes the volume restrictions (this is a rather involved process).
Error Message: “Cannot read property legs.”
It’s likely there is a typing error in your code. Try entering the address into Google Maps, then copy and paste the Maps generated address into the code.
Additionally, the Budget Generator, which is featured in the Plan a Vacation section of both the Create a Budget in Google Sheets lesson for middle and high school students and the Plan and Budget lesson for adult learners, has been replaced with a Google number generator. This will look different than what is displayed int the video, but will still generate a number for the budget generator.
In Lesson 2, Video 4 of Create an Editing Tool with Programming, some people have experienced issues with their code not working.
Double check that your code matches the example exactly. Check for extra spaces between characters, spelling, and punctuation. One error can cause the entire code not to work.
Check to ensure that your code has all of the correct opening and closing brackets { }. If your code is missing a closing bracket } at the end of it, the function isn't brought to an end and it will continuously run.
You can also reference the lesson plan, which has examples of the code in it so that you don't have to review the videos.
There is a known issue in Lesson 6 of Pick the Next Box Office Hit. This issue is noted at the top of the lesson plan.
When students are directed to open their movie posters in a new window, they are sometimes directed to the Google Draw page, which generates a different link from the one required for the Script Editor code. To resolve this, students first have to publish their Google Draw, then use that link in the Script Editor Code.
There is a technical issue preventing the survey results for this unit from appearing on the teacher dashboard that we're working to address.
Ahead of the responses being available, you can continue to track student progress from the Students tab for the class. You can also use the rubric for the lesson to grade their projects.
There have been a number of changes to the way that we structured these lessons on the website. We are working to update the lesson plans for these lessons so that they accurately reflect the experience for the learner and the instructor.
Auto-assigning topics
Previously, there was a feature that allowed teachers to auto-assign topics through the Applied Digital Skills website.
This feature no longer exists. If teachers want to assign topics, they will have to do it verbally or by email.
Limiting topic choices

Increasing topic choices

This feature no longer exists. If teachers want to increase topic choices, they will have to do it verbally or by email.
Rubrics
Explore a Topic lessons enable students to explore on their own with less prescription. As a result, we do not provide a rubric for these lessons as we do with others.
