Accounts and roles

You can access the Applied Digital Skills curricula in the role of a teacher, co-teacher, or student. Using your Google account on the Applied Digital Skills website allows you to choose which role applies to you and interact with others.

Teachers and co-teachers can build classes, assign lessons, make announcements, and review student work. Students can access their lessons, complete assignments, and receive feedback from their teachers.

We recommend that parents and guardians using Applied Digital Skills with their kids use the platform as a teacher, while people learning independently use the platform as a student.

Create an Applied Digital Skills account

As a teacher or guardian
  1. Go to the website, and sign in with a Google account.
  2. Select I’m a teacher.
  3. Create and name your course(s).
  4. Share the course code with your students so they can join your course.
As a co-teacher

First, the lead teacher must find and share a co-teacher code.

Have the lead teacher follow these steps:

  1. From the teacher dashboard, navigate to My Classes.
  2. Find the class you want to add a co-teacher to. Click on the person icon.
  3. Find the Co-teachers area and the bolded code.
  4. Have the new co-teacher create a teacher account and use the bolded code to join your class.

Then, co-teachers can join the class:

  1. Go to the website, and sign in with a Google account.
  2. Select I’m a teacher.
  3. From your teacher dashboard, select Join a class.
  4. Enter the code provided by the other teacher and select Next.

The co-teacher code is required to see the full teacher view.

As a student or learner

Create an account as a student for a traditional classroom:

  1. Go to the website, and sign in with a Google account.
  2. Select I’m a student.
  3. Enter the class code  provided by the teacher.

Create an account as an independent learner (without a teacher or class code):

  1. Go to the website, and sign in with a Google account.
  2. Select I’m a student.
  3. Choose your preferred email settings.
  4. Click View Curriculum to access the lessons.

Switch account roles

You may sign up for your Applied Digital Skills account as a teacher or a student.

These steps can be used to switch roles for reasons such as:

  • A student accidentally signed up as a teacher.
  • A teacher would like to switch to a student account.

You can change the role associated with an account by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Applied Digital Skills account. Make sure to use the same email address that was used to set up the Applied Digital Skills account.
  2. Navigate to My profile (either in the side menu of your dashboard, or by clicking on Teacher or Student in the top right corner of the page).
  3. View the account type (teacher or student).
  4. Click on the Switch to Student or Switch to Teacher link under the account type.
Note: a student will not be able to access the teacher’s view of a class they have joined by switching roles. The co-teacher code is required to see the full teacher view.

Use Applied Digital Skills without setting up a class or signing in

Signing in with a Gmail address is required to be able to complete lessons. While you can view the lessons and videos without signing in, you will not be able to complete the projects using Google Workspace (Docs, Slides, Sheets, etc.).

Most lessons can be completed using different applications if Google Workspace is not suitable. As a teacher, you can modify the projects by instructing the students to watch the videos and apply what they have learned using a different application (for example, other word processing or presentation programs).

While using other software programs will allow students to practice some of the digital skills they have learned, students may not be able to perform some tasks that are taught in the videos, such as making comments on other students’ work or collaborating on projects in real time.

Download account data

You can download a copy of your Applied Digital Skills data directly from your student or teacher profile. This is helpful if you want to have a backup of your data or want to use it with a service outside of Google. Read our Help Center article Privacy and Security for full instructions.
