Get started using your watch

Some information below may be different depending on your version of Android Wear. Learn how to check your watch's Android Wear version.

Wake up or dim your watch

Wake up your watch

To brighten your screen, do any of these actions:

  • Tap the screen.
  • Turn your wrist so your screen is upright.
  • Press any button on the watch (if it has one).

Dim your watch

  • Press your palm onto the screen until it vibrates.
  • Stop tapping the screen, and your watch will dim automatically after a few seconds.

See date & battery status

  1. If the screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
  2. Swipe down from the top of your watch's screen.

Stop interruptions & go offline

You can temporarily silence your watch, turn off its screen, and take it offline.

  1. If the screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  3. Tap a setting to change it:
  • To turn Wi-Fi and mobile data connections on or off, tap Airplane mode Airplane mode.
  • To turn off your screen temporarily, tap Theater mode . To turn your screen back on, press the power button (if your watch has one) or tap the screen repeatedly.
  • To mute or unmute your watch, tap Do Not Disturb DND icon.
  • If your watch has a speaker: To change the volume, tap Volume .

Note: If your watch is running Android Wear 1.5 and below, to find Settings: Swipe down from the top of the screen, then swipe left until you see Settings Settings and tap it.

Lock your watch screen

To set your screen to lock automatically when you're not wearing the watch:

Android Wear 2.0 and up

  1. If the screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Settings Settings.
  4. Scroll down and tap Personalization People.
  5. Scroll down and tap Screen Lock.

Android Wear 1.5 and below

  1. If your screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
  2. Swipe from right to left to see a list of apps.
  3. Tap Settings Settings.
  4. Scroll down and tap Screen lock.
  5. Tap the check mark Done.
  6. Draw the pattern you'll use to unlock your watch. Draw it again to confirm.

Your screen will also lock when the watch loses its Bluetooth connection with your phone.

To lock the screen manually: Follow steps 1–3 above, then tap Lock screen now.

If you forget your unlock pattern:

  1. Draw an incorrect pattern 3 times.
  2. Wait for 1 minute while the screen grays out.
  3. Draw an incorrect pattern 3 more times.
  4. Wait for 1 minute while the lock screen is grayed out.
  5. Enter an incorrect pattern 3 times.
  6. You’ll see a factory reset confirm screen.
  7. To confirm the reset, tap the check mark Done.

Your watch will restart without the password required to sign in.

Use apps & voice actions

Use and get apps

Open an app already on your watch

  1. If your screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
  2. Go to your list of apps:
    • Android Wear 2.0 and up: Press the power button.
    • Android Wear 1.9 and below: Swipe left.
  3. Tap the app you want to open.

Tip: You can also open an app by saying "Ok Google, open (the app's name)."

Get more apps from the Play Store

Android Wear 2.0 and up

  1. Press the power button on your watch.
  2. Swipe up or down and tap Play store Play Store. You'll be signed in with the main Google Account on your watch.
  3. To search for a new app, tap Search Search.
  4. If you want to download the app, tap Install.

To open the app, press the power button.

Android Wear 1.5 and below

Apps you have on your phone that are available on your watch will automatically sync.

Use voice actions

Android Wear 2.0 and up

Press and hold the power button. Say your question or task. Learn more about using voice actions with the Google Assistant.

Android Wear 1.5 and below

  1. If your screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
  2. Say "Ok Google." You’ll see a microphone .
  3. Say your question or task.
See your contacts
  1. If your screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
  2. Go to your list of contacts:
    • Android Wear 2.0 and up: Press the power button. Scroll up or down and tap Contacts People.
    • Android Wear 1.5 and below: Swipe right to left 2 times.
  3. Scroll to see your contacts.
