Set up & use a Gamepad for Nexus Player

If a game in the Play Store app says "Gamepad Required", you'll need to buy a Gamepad for Nexus Player and connect it to your Nexus Player. 

If you’re unsure whether you have a Nexus Player, learn about what comes with a Nexus Player.

Set up your Gamepad

  1. On the front of your Gamepad, press and hold the Power button Power for 3 seconds. You'll see 4 lights flash. If the lights don't flash, hold down the Back Back and the Home Home buttons at the same time for 5 seconds.
  2. From the Android TV Home screen, scroll down and select Settings Settings.
  3. Scroll down to "Remote & accessories" and select Add accessory Bluetooth.
  4. Select your Gamepad.

Use your Gamepad

  • Turn your Gamepad on or off: Press and hold the Power button Power for 3 seconds.
  • Go to the Home screen: Press the Home button Home.
  • Go to the previous screen: Press the Back button Back.
  • Put your Gamepad in pairing mode: Press the Back Back and the Home Home buttons at the same time for 5 seconds.
  • Move up, down, left, or right: Use the Gamepad’s D-pad.
  • Select an item: Press A.

Note: If you don’t use your Gamepad for a few minutes, it will go to sleep.

Gamepad won’t pair with Nexus Player

If you’re having trouble getting your Gamepad to connect to your Nexus Player, try the steps below.

Step 1: Try pairing mode again

  1. Press the button on the bottom on your Nexus Player.
  2. Press and hold the Back Back and Power Power buttons at the same time for 5 seconds. You'll see 4 lights flash.
  3. If your Gamepad doesn’t show up on your screen, select the Gamepad from the list with your remote.

Step 2: Restart your Nexus Player and Gamepad

  1. Unplug your Nexus Player for 10 seconds. Plug it back in.
  2. On the back of your Gamepad, remove the battery holder for 5 seconds. Put the battery holder back in place.
  3. Repeat Step 1 (pairing mode).

Step 3: Reset your Nexus Player to factory settings

  1. Reset your Nexus Player to factory settings.
  2. Repeat Step 1 (pairing mode).
