Merchant hardware requirements

Accepting Android Pay in stores requires certain hardware and configurations. Check your equipment using the guidelines below and work with your suppliers to make sure you’re ready to accept payments made with Android Pay in stores. 

Terminals

Make sure your hardware is ready to accept Android Pay in stores.

  • Make sure your payment terminals are contactless-enabled and that their NFC readers are turned on
  • Android Pay supports EMV contactless and MSD (Magstripe) contactless payments (if EMV contactless isn’t available)
  • Android Pay supports FeliCa based contactless payments
  • Depending on your payment terminal vendor, several NFC-compatible terminal models are likely already available 
  • Usually such terminals display one or more of the following logos and is compliant with the ISO 14443 standard

Contact your terminal provider if you're unsure whether your current terminals support NFC payments or if you need guidance on how to upgrade or enable them.

If you determine you need new hardware in stores, contact your terminal provider and ask about getting terminals that are "NFC-ready."  

Point-of-sale

Your point-of-sale (POS) system needs to be able to receive contactless payment data coming from your payment terminal, and pass it along to your payment processor. You may need to make some configuration changes to enable contactless payments.

Work with your POS provider to ensure your system is ready to accept contactless payment data.

PCI compliance

Contactless payments don't add specific compliance requirements beyond standard Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance for processing payments. The security requirements already in place for accepting card payments as mandated by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) are sufficient.

Work with your terminal provider, point-of-sale provider, and acquirer to ensure ongoing compliance with the required security measures.

Payment partners

In order to accept Android Pay in your Android mobile app, you must use the credit card processors, credit card networks, and card issuing banks that support Android Pay.  Learn more about integrating with the Android Pay API.

For Android Pay in stores, most acquirers already support contactless payments, but may require specific configuration or setup for your merchant account to enable them.

Work with your acquirer institution to ensure they can process contactless payments and to have that capability enabled for your account.

User device requirements

Android Pay works with credit or debit cards from participating card issuing banks on any NFC-enabled Android device running KitKat (4.4) or for in-store purchases. Customers can use devices that are not NFC-enabled to make Android Pay purchases in merchant mobile apps.
Android Pay works on any NFC-F-enabled Android device running KitKat (4.4) for in-store purchases.
