Steering wheel controls no longer work
1
When I first started using Android Auto about 10 months, it worked absolutely fine. No problems whatsoever.

I haven't driven much in the last 7 months. I noticed about 1-2 months ago that none of my steering wheel buttons are working for Android Auto anymore.

I can't change tracks in Spotify anymore, I can't answer calls and voice command only activates Audis voice control.

And whilst I don't care all too much about this one.... The display behind the steering wheel between the speedo, no longer displays the tracks being played by Spotify.

I've seen lots of people reporting similar problems but no one seems to have a solution.

I have an Audi A3 2017.

Based on what I've seen online about Android Auto version 5 having problems... I tempted to install an older version?

I have a new merc with the mbux system and none of the steering wheel controls on the left side work in AA except for volume and answering calls.   I use Spotify a lot so changing tracks etc has to be via the touch screen... not ideal for safety in my view.   This also applies to the glide pad in the centre console which only allows me to go to the next track.   And the screen UI needs to be fixed to meet the new mbux widescreen format.   All of this worked with my previous model car.   Pls fix.

I too have the similar issue. Using AA in Mitsubishi Outlander 2018 model with Pixel 5 and original cable from Google.

AA crashes and disconnects abruptly. Then unplugging and plugging back cable gets the AA back.

It's frustrating.

I'm having the same issue with my Subaru 2018 Outback.  I'm not sure if this began with my update to Android 11 or with the update to AA ver 5.8.  I'm also having an issue with SiriusXM.  When I launch AA and go to Google Maps, Sirius XM stops working and then sometimes Google Maps freezes.  There are no error messages on any screens.  I have a Samsung Galaxy S9.

I am having the same problem with the Honda Civic 2020. I was able to skip songs until two months after getting the car, it won't allow me to skip my songs in Spotify. However, the buttons weren't broken because it allowed me to skip in Bluetooth. I have a OnePlus 8 Pro. Did you solve the problem from what AndroidAuto Team forwarded you? I would like to receive some help as well.

I am having the same issue in my 67 plate Captur. Its constantly disconnecting AA despite my phone showing it connected. My maps are struggling to find GPS signal. And half my steering controls don't work.
I checked my controls when not connected to AA amd they work fine.

Same issue in Mitsubishi Mirage as of today.  Steering wheel (to change tracks; volume does work) and central control panel buttons (to pause and resume) no longer work with Spotify in Android Auto.  Haven't gotten calls in the car yet so not sure about that.  Note that AA only connects via bluetooth for me as my car does not have a screen.

Same issue for me - I have a 2014 Holden Cruze and Google Pixel 5. All steering wheel functions worked fine until last week, now I have to touch the phone to change songs. I can still use the Holden MyLink system to make calls by voice and via the steering wheel controls but it isn't as clever as Google. Voice control on Android Auto is a bit iffy too now - I ask Google something and it acknowledges the request but doesn't carry it out.

I have the same issue on a Nokia 8.3 running Android 10, Android Auto 5.9.604634-release and Android Auto for Phone Screens, connecting to a 2012 Peugeot 5008 over Bluetooth (car isn't Android Auto-compatible).

The audio is controlled by switches/buttons on a steering-wheel stalk—with Android Auto running, the skip forward/back track buttons don't work and the car display of artist+title doesn't track what's playing. Stopping Android Auto restores the expected functionality. I haven't tested phone use yet, but can do so, or run any other tests/reports that might help.

Same. 2019 Ford Ranger. Android 9 on a new Samsung XCover FieldPro bought in September.
Phone updated to Android auto 5.9.604634-release on 12/2. I used Spotify with android auto next on 12/3 and that is when the skip fwd and skip rev buttons stopped working on my stereo (they work in the app but that's not safe while driving). If I closed android auto and just ran Spotify it worked.

Everything worked OK prior to this update.

One more. I have a Citroën C4 Mk2. Huawei P30 pro running AA via phone screen. Since updating the Android Auto app the steering wheel control no longer skips tracks on Spotify. It worked fine before. When exiting AA, the skip track functionality returns so it is definitely the app.

My car head unit is Pioneer AVH-4200NEX; phone is LG V60; Android 10; all firmware/software up to date; I am able to control volume with my steering wheel controls but I can't control track selection. Very odd that I can control one thing but not the other. So as it stands now, I have to take my eyes off the road, my hands off the wheel, unlock the phone, find the the playlist and change the song manually. Before I bought the new LG phone I had a Pixel 3XL, the messaging with Android Auto hardly worked. It's hit or miss with the LG. I really wish the developers would thoroughly test before they push out updates to minimize impacts. I know they have a variety of cars/phones/softwares to code for but if the app is unusable then it's not worth much.

Pixel 4 fully updated. AA on device.

If it means anything, on my 2016 CRV, only volume up/down work on the steering wheel. Track fwd/back doesn’t nor does it on the head unit screen controls. Works on the AA screen. Pause on the car head unit screen won’t work, but when I pause on the AA screen, the head unit screen reflects the pause.

Intermittent issue with listening to texts and voice calls.  After notification of a new text in both AA and head unit, playing text immediately asks if I want to reply without reading text. Asking assistant to read new texts does tell me there is a new one, but also immediately asks if I want to reply without reading text. Restating Pixel fixes it but it comes back. Same issue with hearing voice calls over speakers. Initiating texts and voice calls work using the assistant.

This does sort of take the usefulness out of the AA experience. I live in a hands free state and I drive a good bit.

I do appreciate being able to run AA on the Pixel so I don’t have to buy a new head unit. Have been using it in this same car for four years with no problems until recently.

I did do a factory reset on the car head unit and Pixel...before I tripped over this post!

Good luck tracking this down. I need it to work reliably.

Thanks.

EDIT:
It is true that when not in the AA app, every one of the above issues goes away. No issues with steering wheel controls, voice and texts work fine. I just have to turn off screen locking while in the car and restart the music streaming app whenever I get out. Like the old days.

Also got the same problem with messages not reading and going straight to reply.

Both of these features worked fine previously.

I've been using Auto from my LG V60 phone mounted in my 2017 Nissan Titan with no problem all year. Then suddenly yesterday I find that I can no longer change the songs (via Spotify) using my steering wheel controls if Auto is running. If I close Auto then my steering wheel controls return and work fine. If I then launch Auto they stop working again.

If there's anything I can do that would help y'all out for finding a fix, let me know because I like Android Auto and want to be able to keep using it.

Hi,

I'm currently having the exact same issue. No issues before Christmas and then all of a sudden the controls in the car don't work or show the songs playing on either Spotify or prime music I'm assuming this is due to the update. This also does not allow to answer phone calls as I cannot accept them via the controls in my car which I could do last month. Other phones work fine so not a car issue. Voice activating doesn't work either. I have the Pixel 4a. I have tried all the recommended steps but still doesn't work. It won't even let me change the control setting over to the car either. This is making it more dangerous and encouraging people to touch their phone whilst driving as no way of skipping songs with the update without touching your phone. It's so annoying. If possible could you please fix.

Exact same here. Thought it was me messing stuff up. If this is a bug from an update, it should be fixed. New laws don't allow me to even touch my phone while driving. It's completely pointless to use Android Auto if I can't change something as simple as the song without risking getting pulled over.
