Why does Android Auto assume the user is the driver? 0 Recommended Answers 5 Replies 10 Upvotes

The apps constantly display "Keep your eyes on the road..." or similar messages, and block the UI for a while in an attempt to get your attention back on the road.  While I appreciate the intention, it is really annoying because often it is the passenger who is using the screen and trying to choose some music, not the driver, hence the assumption that it is distracting the driver is invalid.  If nothing else, it frustrates the driver and passengers, which is the opposite of what it wants to achieve.

Because most of the times the driver is the user, as android Auto is designed for using your phone while you are driving, not for someone else to use your phone while you are driving.

Again, that is exactly my point; it is an assumption, and I'd argue an incorrect one, especially in different geographies where you don't average 1 person per car.

With big screens on the center console of a car, they are not just meant for the driver, they are the media and entertainment (audio only) system for all passengers.  When travelling, isn't it preferable that a passenger manages navigation, media, etc... and the driver just drives?
Have you ever seen a non-android-auto car audio and/or navigation system that intentionally bugs you when you try to use it while the car is moving?
More to the point, if you don't have android auto in your dash, and use your phone on a tiny screen on a flimsy mount point on your windscreen...it doesn't bug you to "look at the road", while it is way more dangerous than using a big screen with a purpose-built simplified UI.

Waze already solved this when using the app on their phone.  You click a dialog box saying "Yes, I'm the passenger; not driving", and it stops assuming otherwise.

I agree that the designers are not thinking at all about the various use cases for this app. It's like they assume they are the only ones on the planet. No friends, no family, no passengers who may think differently. If someone else is in the car and I'm driving, I do the safe thing and give my phone to them to enter the directions. But it's all thwarted by their silly attempts at making it impossible to do things

Specifically to the expert's point: [Android auto is] "not for someone else to use your phone while you are driving"

Again, that's the whole misunderstanding here.  Passengers are not wanting to use my phone,  they've already got their own.  They're trying to use my car's Media Center and play some music, which happens to run off my phone through Android Auto, by design.  Because Android Auto doesn't let them (and keeps freezing asking the driver to keep his eyes on the road), they have to use my phone - which was otherwise happily stored in the central armrest

My first time using this was as a passenger. It kept saying that it is paused until the car is parked every single light. As a passenger I found this extremely distracting. Worse, after I gave up, the screen on my phone flashed trying to get me to set it up.

My concern with this is simply this : when I am driving, I listen to music and use maps on my phone. Having this appear on the dashboard is safer. If everything disables while driving there's no point in this app at all as I will NEVER be able to use it in a car.

At this point I have no intention of ever using this app and would just like it to stop distracting me to set it up every time the car stops. It has no usefulness, just a source of distraction.

This is kinda like how Sony phones randomly turn down audio while driving, requiring me to respond to a screen prompt which then blasts the audio at full volume. Well intentioned, but pointless.
