If you are using Android Auto with Samsung phones running Android Pie (version: 9), you will need to manually set night mode on your phone settings to enable night mode for Android Auto. The team is working with Samsung on a fix for this issue that should roll-out in an upcoming OS version of Android. Thank you for your patience.

<Steps on Samsung phone>
  1. Open phone Settings .
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display.
  3. Toggle Night mode to activate.
<For easier access to Night mode, you can also add the function to the Quick Settings panel>
  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. On the Quick Settings panel > Tap on the three-dot menu> Tap Button Order
  3. Select and drag Night mode button to your desired location on the panel.
  4. Tap Done on the bottom.
Latest Android Pie update from Samsung has scheduled options to enable Night mode. Please set your scheduled settings to ‘Sunset to sunrise’ if the above workaround does not work.

<Steps on scheduled Night Mode>
  1. Open phone Settings .
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display.
  3. Toggle Turn on as scheduled.
  4. Select Sunset to sunrise.

This is not only a problem with Samsung phones, but happens with my bq Aquaris X device (which uses stock Android 8.1) too.

I found a workaround by installing a little helper app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gb.aahelper.hr) and it works fine so far. However, it's still not solved as long as an additional app needs to be installed.

See thread about the same topic in the old product forum at https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/android-auto/5tTM_febFTU/H2DvtOP6CwAJ.

One more thing: I noticed that the same problem is listed in the "Known Issues" topic at https://support.google.com/androidauto/thread/2475001?hl=en:
  • Android Messages changes my Day/Night mode on Android Auto
    - The Android Messages team prepared a fix for the upcoming update of the Messages app. (3/15)
Is this the same problem that we're seeing here, and has this been fixed meanwhile? (yesterday on March 21 and without my workaround installed, the problem still occured).

I already have night mode turned on. If I turn it off, will it kill the issue with Night mode staying on in Waze???

I would like to be able to use night mode on my phone all the time (basically a dark theme to me) but have AA use car controlled theme to help with visibility. Hope this scenario will be supported with the updates!

S10+ user here, glad I ran across this thread. Any update on an ETA from Samsung?

Related, how did nobody catch this before hand? It's issues like this that make me keep an iPhone as a backup.

I have the same problem. I made a change from S7 to S10 and the the night mode is not working anymore.
I tried to change the setting but no success at the end.

I had to downgrade back to Oreo on my Galaxy S8 to get rid of this issue.

This is NOT Samsung issue. AA when NOT connected to Head unit (run on phone) switch night mode correctly. So very likely AA on Pie CAN'T identify when car head unit turn on night or day mode. As simple  as that.

Your idea with "from dusk till down" mode is not a solution. If it's noon and you are in the tunnel car head unit turns into night mode, so previously AA did it too. With your idea AA will  be still in day mode making you blind in a road trip:((
Please fix AA!

I'm not convinced this is a Samsung issue. I have a Samsung S10 and used AA in a 2017 Hyundai i40 until end of November 2019, and dark mode worked perfectly fine automatically changing when the car lights activated. However, 1 December I changed to a 2019 Honda Civic, where AA does not auto activate dark mode. My partner has a S10, and uses AA in a 2018 Kia Ceed and has no issues.
