(If you use Android Auto on your car display, you can stop reading.)

When you use Android Auto on your phone screen, your phone will be set to "Do not disturb - Priority only" mode that's specific to Android Auto:
  • Calls: All calls are treated as priority. When a call comes in, it’ll make a sound on your phone or your car audio when it’s connected via Bluetooth. A notification card will also show up on your phone screen.
    • The notification sound on the phone is based on your current ringer volume.
    • If you have trouble with the volume on your car audio, please refer to this article.
  • Messages: All message notifications from messaging apps supporting Android Auto, as seen here, are routed to Android Auto.
*If you have more restrictive setting than Android Auto’s priority mode above, your setting will stay as is.

When you exit Android Auto, “Do not disturb - Priority” mode will go back to your previous setting.

If you see anything different from the expected behavior above, please let us know on this thread what’s happening and how your setting is like before/after using Android Auto.

My phone is an LG G 6. I have a GMC Terrain 2012 . android auto kicks on when it connects with the car's Bluetooth. It has two major faults related to this. One is the Do not disturb auto setting has no options for levels. The priority only is a lie. I have certain numbers as always ring that in this mode never ring through. My only option to get around this problem, is to exit the program. This in turn causes your program to randomly restart and rerestrict those same calls. I believe this is a great app, but it has some dangerous flaws. I would gladly discuss with software engineering possible solutions especially for goverment employees.

There is an additional problem with this - in "do not disturb" mode, Waze is muted.  I kept thinking Waze had crashed (not checking the phone while driving).  Turns out, it was just muted.  I have subsequently disabled the auto-launch feature when bluetooth is detected.  This "do not disturb" mode in phone-only usage should be a toggle - allow us users to turn it off and stop "nannying" us.  Without being able to turn of "do not disturb" I just stop using the app, rendering it useless.

Why, Just WHY, pray won’t someone (on the Android Auto development Team or Android Auto team) answer ONE simple question!!!
Why in h£Ck can’t this stupid, annoying, frankly invasive to my privacy automatic setting be turned off.  Why in God’s name don’t you give the end user the choice as to wether or not the want this feature on or OFF?
In my case EVERY time I turn on android Auto I have to minimize it then go into settings an turn "do not disturb" off.  It’s a simple fix. Give the end user the option!!!

Why can not I disable the automatic do not disturb mode on AA? I fully agree with the user Clyde S. It is unbearable to remember all the times that Android Auto starts, manually disable the do not disturb mode. In my case, the do not disturb mode cancels everything related to audio. I can not listen to music, I can not hear the answers from the Google assistant, I can not hear the directions from Google Maps and so on. Instead of making it safer, on the contrary, they make it more dangerous because if you did not remember to deactivate the do not disturb mode before starting to drive, you have to juggle to reach the configuration in full operation of the vehicle. I do not understand how the team of developers of Android Auto, has not yet solved this widely criticized situation by many users of the application, a long time ago.

Totally agree with Clyde and Juan,

Android Auto forcefully setting the phone in DnD mode makes the user to mess with settings on phone when person sits to drive, rather than simply putting it on car phone holder and driving.

Android Auto's forced DnD mode mutes all the voice notifications while driving, it even mutes voice navication, so user have to take his/her eyes off the road and onto the phone screen to see where to turn next. This is making Android Auto more dangerous to use, rather making easy while driving. Same is the case with messages, it doesn't read them aloud, and user have to take eyes off the road.

It would be much better if Android Auto offer this as an option in its settings. Which I'm sure more than 90% of the users will immediately turn off. Then after learning the feedback if more users using it, enable or disable it be default.

I have same issue. Just after a Samsung update, I hook S7 to AA and phone is muted to all notifications. Very annoying.

my issue is that message alerts are muted. at least in my case when I drive I mute most alerts except for my stared contacts it would be just fine if message alerts were not muted. I just like to know a message came in so I know to check it out when at a light. I don't want to get in the habit of looking at the screen all the time.

And now It's getting worse: even when manually disabled (as suggested by @Clyde S) AA turn DND back on automatically (at least on my device: Galaxy  S9 running Android Pie)

What the heck? I used to be able to listen to my bluetooth connected galaxy s10e phone (music) while android auto was running..Now it turns on DO NOT DISTURB mode and allows only calls, no audio! You cant turn OFF DND or turn ON audio. What gives? Maybe time for a new GPS app. This is ridiculous!
