Q: Why can’t we use Bluetooth for Android Auto in the car dash?

A: Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth to render audio & video for Android Auto.

Q: Why is Bluetooth used when Android Auto has a USB connection?
   * Example: Bluetooth is used for phone calls via HFP (Hands Free Protocol).

A: Android manufactures implement a variety of Bluetooth standards as well as Hardware SoC’s (System on a Chip). Android Auto needs to work reliably in your vehicle so the standard is to connect over Bluetooth HFP for voice calls.

I understand the use of Bluetooth but I've seen a wired issue with Android Auto and Bluetooth. Let's say I gets into my car connects the cable to my phone and boom, automatically the Bluetooth of my phone turns on, it gets connected to my car, I can use Android Auto, all good stuffs.
Now let's say during the ride you take a halt. You unplug the phone from your car. Android Auto gets disconnected. Now you taking a small tea break during the ride. Please note all these time the Bluetooth of your phone is still on as you didn't manually turned it off.
Now you come back to your car, connect your cable again and Android Auto starts functioning again. But the magical thing is now if you get a call on your phone it won't work over HFP. You literally have to take your car to a side and take the call on your phone.
The only way I found to resolve this issue is disconnect from Android Auto. Turn the Bluetooth off manually and then again when you connect on future Bluetooth will automatically turn on again and gets connected to your car. Otherwise Android Auto might work much not the hands free calling. This is really annoying. Don't know why this happens. I don't even know if anyone else also face this issue. But I do and all the people I know also face the same issue. If you guys have any idea how to fix it, then it would be really helpful. Thanks in advance. I hope someone reads this comment.

I understand that Bluetooth couln't have enough bandwidth for video but the app could ask for a wired connection whenever a user want to see a video!
I already listen to the music wirelessly and I don't think that a navigation app needs a so big amount of data.

Considering all the issues I'm having with Android Auto disconnecting Bluetooth my preference would be to route the call audio over the cable as well.

A choice would be nice.

Android Auto forces me to use the car's bluetooth speaker for phone calls, and over-rides my headset. Because of this "feature" I do not use Android Auto at all. Otherwise I would love it. But this is a deal killer.

My Mazda was able to use Carplay over USB and pipe all calls and music through USB only. No Bluetooth connection at all.

Now with android auto I need both connections. Problem is, I use the built in navigation system in my car. Not Google maps. I mute the audible directions from the car because I have a HUD Projected onto my windshield. I don't need voice directions and a HUD and directions on my infotainment screen. For some stupid reason Google assistant is tied to this same volume control so I can't use Google assistant while driving with my navigation running as I'm constantly bombarded with turn by turn directions. I have to activate Google assistant and quickly turn up the navigation volume and hope I catch the GA prompts to use it.

Very poor integration with cars. Kinda shocking overall the state AA is in considering its age. Probably one of the worst products Google has put out. Aside from android itself. We need another mobile OS option badly.

A: Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth to render audio & video for Android Auto.

Unless the screen is displaying a 4k video or a crazy frame rate, this answer doesn't match up with factual information about the bandwidth necessary for a video stream, and the bandwidth available via bluetooth.

From what I understand how Android auto works is Android auto runs on the phone. Every process that happens on screen goes through the phone and not the cars radio. If this process was to happen through Bluetooth it would be incredibly slow. Plus I don't see the inconvenience. Doing this through USB allows you to charge your phone at the same time.
