Android Auto doesn't display on car screen since October 2019 security update.

  • Error message: if available  None
  • Were you able to connect to Android Auto prior to the issue? Yes
  • Car / head unit make & model: 2016 Chevy Spark
  • Phone make & model: Samsung Galaxy S8
  • Android OS version: 9
  • Android Auto app version: 4.7.593824-release
  • Google Play services version: (Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications > App info) > Google Play services 19.5.30 (100408-275531062)
I have been using AA in my 2016 Chevy Spark for 3 years with no issues.  I installed the security update earlier in October and AA hasn't worked since.  I plug my phone in and I get the notification that says connected to car but it doesn't display on the car screen. I got a new USB 3.0 cable and it still doesn't work. I noticed the Android System USB is set to charging... should it be?  How can this be fixed?  AA was one if the reasons I bought this car.

Same thing is happening to me, except I have a Pixel 4XL. I have chatted with Google support but no help yet. Of course they suggest clearing Cache and Storage but that has not helped. They had me clear those also for the Google App and Play Store. No help. I have factory reset my brand new phone twice in the week I have had it.

I found a temporary (albeit annoying) work around that I wonder if will work for you. If I open Play Store and find Android Auto in my installed apps and uninstall updates, then plug my phone to the car, it will run through initial setup and download updates. Then it will work but ONLY for that session. If the phone gets disconnected or you turn the car off, you have to uninstall updates and run through the above again..

I hope that Google works this out for us. AA has become an important appointment for my daily use. Since it has stopped working seamlessly, I fin myself distracted while driving to fiddle with it to make it work.

This has been happening to me since around the same time as well. Here's my (somewhat annoying) fix that's a little quicker than the reinstall fix mentioned by others. (By the way, using a Pixel 2XL in a 2016 Chevy here)

1. I wait until the car display shows that Bluetooth is connected, then I plug the phone in.
2. A popup appears on the car display asking if I want to switch to Android Auto. I tap the "Switch" button.
3. My phone screen flickers rapidly off and on a few times, and the icons appear at the top of the phone screen that indicate it is connected.
4. I then open Twitter on the phone, scroll until I find a video ad, then tap the video to make it full screen.
5. When I tap the back button to exit the full screen ad on the phone, the car display now shows Android Auto like it's supposed to...for that session only.

Other info:
- I've had to do this ritual every time I start up my car if I want to use Android Auto.
- I don't know if this works with other video sources (YouTube or Facebook or whatever). I stopped testing after trying Twitter since it worked.
- Full screen GIFs or images won't do the trick.
- You don't have to watch the full video. You can back out immediately.
- Android Auto will still disconnect during a session if I leave the music/audiobook/podcast/whatever paused for too long.

I also have this problem. I though I was having problem with my car systems but reading this post I realize that it's not the car that's the problem.

  • Error message: "Couldn't connect. Check that the device support Android Auto."
  • Were you able to connect to Android Auto prior to the issue? Yes
  • Car / head unit make & model: Skoda Octavia 2020 / Head unit: Amundsen
  • Phone make & model: Samsung S10+ (SM-G975F)
  • Android OS version: 10
  • ONE UI version: 2.0
  • Android Auto app version: 4.9.594934
    - (APK download but from a verified source from where I've used and updated the app from since 2017 and has always worked perfect until this last update)
  • Google Play services version: 19.8.31
Got the tip on some forum to install "Android Auto for phone screens" but that didn't help neither.
Reset and uninstall/reinstall android auto and cleaned cache but doesn't work.
Following the FAQ here or tips on other forums doesn't resolve the issue

Exact same here. If I uninstall from the play store which takes it back to the pre-installed version, I connect and it auto updates and then works. The next time I get in the car it won't connect again.

Hi everyone!

I've found a solution in a german Opel Corsa E forum site, that I'd like to share with you.

Firstly I bought a new USB data cable, because the previous one has been broken. The new one is a high quality flexible cable and costs only about 5 pounds (at least in my country)
The cable model is:
AXAGON BUCM-AM05SB 0,5m USB-C USB-A data cable

So the solution I've found to get the latest Android Auto version (4.9.594934-release arm64-v8a) work is as follows:
- Make sure that Deezer application is installed on your android phone (I've a Sony Xperia 10 mobile with Android 9)
- Before connecting your phone to your car start Deezer application
- Start to play any song in Deezer application then pause it, leave Deezer application running in the background
- Connect your phone to your car
- After a couple of seconds Android Auto icon should appear on your car's display
- If Android Auto icon is not showing on your car display, don't panic, just enter Deezer application on your phone and start to play a song, and pause it. Now after pausing song in Deezer, Android Auto icon should really appear on your car's display.

I checked my Corsa's IntelliLink version and it's rather old 12.6.2, still managed to work with newest Android Auto.

Despite of this tricky solution, I'm planning to upgrade my car's firmware to the latest one, but I haven't got a confirmation yet from my dealer.

I hope it helps you fellows.

Good luck,
Walter

Same problem here;
  • Error message: None
  • Were you able to connect to Android Auto prior to the issue? Yes, for more than three years
  • Car / head unit make & model: 2016 Chevy Spark LTZ
  • Phone make & model: Xiaomi Mi 8
  • Android OS version: 10
  • Android Auto app version: version 5.0.500224-release
  • Google Play services version: version 19.8.31 (120400-284611645)

The only working solution for me is downgrading Android Auto to September release and use that old version of the app. January 24th and still no solution from the Google team to this issue.
Google, please, solve this!

I am also having the same issue with my 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. I've had the same luck with workarounds most others have tried. I hope Google can get this fixed soon as well. If there is any details I can provide to help let me know!

Same problem here;

Error message: please connect a compatible device
Able to connect with no issue prior to October 2019
Car  2016 Chevrolet Malibu  Factory Head Unit
Phone: Samsung s10- verizon
Android OS: Version 10

Have to COMPLETELY wipe my phone of android auto and my phone out of my cars device list.  Will work after reinstall and configured for one session then the "please connect compatible device" message shows up.  Android Auto shows up in my notifications and is connected.  Can still make calls and listen to music through Bluetooth only but the android auto interface does not display on the vehicle.

Nonresponse from Google, apple car play works though!
Feb 24, 2020
DEVICE: HUAWEI SNE-LX1 Mate 20 Lite
AUTO: CITROEN GRAN C4 PICASSO 2018

From a certain moment the images of AndroidAuto began to appear corrupt (screenshot attached), I don't know if it happened following an update of the phone or of the application or other ...
The display of the machine works well for everything else.
I checked that I have the latest updated version of both the phone and AndoridAuto; also the sw of the machine I updated not long ago.
If it can help, I noticed that now the AndroidAuto icon on the machine's display is gray instead of being blue (as in the past).

I have the same issues as stated above:

  • Error message: None
  • Were you able to connect to Android Auto prior to the issue? Yes. Connects when first plugged in and updated but after disconnecting USB it won't reconnect without uninstalling updates.
  • Car / head unit make & model: 2016 Chevy Malibu MyLink System
  • Phone make & model: Samsung Galaxy S10 (New)
  • Android OS version: 10
  • Android Auto app version: version 5.0.500224-release
  • Google Play services version: version 20.04.14 (120400-294335909)
Any help resolving this issue would be wonderful. I am strongly thinking about returning my Galaxy and converting to iPhone.

Thanks.

I have had this issue in my 2019 Chevy Bolt for months now as well. Android Auto simply does not work anymore. It will not load.  When I plug in my phone it asks me to allow access to the phones data. Whether I say accept or deny, it starts to play a random wav file from my phone through the car speakers. I had this issue on my Samsung Galaxy S10 with every one of the SIX USB cables I tried, and I just got the new Galaxy S20 and the exact same problem is still happening. It's maddening that Google can't get this figured out meanwhile Apple Carplay runs perfectly for anyone who plugs in an iPhone. What in the world is going on?
