Why is the wifi icon missing from AA screen

I use my built in car wifi when using android auto instead of cellular data. Android Auto used to show the wifi icon up top next to the weather info and cell reception bars. However for the past week the wifi icon has been missing, even though my phone is still connecting to the wifi. I liked seeing the wifi icon while using AA and seeing the signal strength. Why has the icon disappeared from my AA screen? Is this a bug?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for contacting us with your question. With the March/April update of Android Auto, the WiFi icon was removed from the status bar. This is the intended behavior, done in order to minimize the number of items in the status bar of the car’s head unit. We will share your feedback for preferring to see the WiFi icon.

Thanks!

Even I can't use my Car's wifi hotspot. My wireless AA is 5GHz and my Car's wifi hotspot is 2.4 GHz. AA forces my phone to use mobile data instead.

Yes. See the same thing. Wi-Fi is not displaying despite the phone being on Wi-Fi.

Having the same issue 2021 F-150. If I force connect to my hotspot network, Android auto will not work wirelessly. It wants me to connect to the Wi-Fi direct network to support Android Auto, but doing so causes me to use mobile data. Appears this is a recent change.

My Android auto app prompted a required update and now that I’m on the most recent release I lost the WiFi icon again.

@krishna AA team. Update on this fix?

@tm 264 — OP’spost isn’t about successfully connecting to WiFi or Using wireless android auto. It’s about the WiFi icon not showing on the top right of the AA dashboard alerting you that your AA is connected.

You should search for your issue and post there or create an new topic.

As far as the OP reporting the issue I fixed mine

I have a Samsung galaxy S10e that has AA connected to a hotspot, too.

I reverted back through previous AA builds one at a time and the icon came back for me once I got back to the release before mid June.

Hope this helps fix the bug on newer releases. I’ll look for the release model and repost also.

Edit - Android Auto 7.5.621334-release is the stable version that still shows the WiFi icon in AA dashboard on head unit screen.

Hope that helps

Chili

Thank you for your reply. Actually my concern is why I can't use wifi internet connection while connecting wirelessly? My Pixel 6 pro forces using mobile data instead of car's hotspot as soon as connecting to AA wirelessly.

@Krishna AA Team
As a developer myself, I think in general it's not a good practice to completely remove functionalities in app updates. I mean, those functionalities can be removed but, then you should give users the possibility to bring them back, on app settings for example.

In this case in particular, in my opinion that screen corner isn't so cluttered so icons have to be removed but anyways, as said, give users choice.
