As per report templates, here's the boilerplate:

  • Error message: None, symptom is car screen freeze
  • Are you using Android Auto on your phone screen or car’s display? - Car display, via USB cable
  • Car / head unit make & model: Suzuki Ignis GL+ 2019 built in car head
  • Phone make & model: Lenovo P2a42
  • Android OS version: 7.0 (latest stock for my phone)
  • Android Auto app version: Latest at time of writing,
    4.5.5928, Aug 1 2019
  • Google Play services version: 18.3.85

Android Auto starts up normally when hooking up a USB cable. I can see the Auto on my car's display. All functionality works normally (all apps, voice commands, steering wheel controls etc).

After about 5 minutes to most commonly 10 minutes, the display on the car will freeze, and the music will stop playing. The app will not respond to any steering wheel or touch screen controls. (I can still use the buttons in the car to back out of Android Auto connection, and go to car's "home" desktop to play the radio etc normally. Car unit is fine, only android auto locks up).

Most troubling is that after I unplug the USB cable from the phone, the navigation I was using and the music I was playing will not restart. I had to pull over somewhere to setup my destination and start navigating in Google Driving anew on my phone. This is very troublesome if I don't have anywhere close to pull over, I have no way to get my navigation to my destination back, I have to set it up again on the phone which I cannot do when driving.

What I have tried so far (and it failed to resolve issue):
 - Clear Play Services and Android Auto data & cache
 - Use old and new screen output in Android Auto options (old one sucks, no way to start the music player that I want)
 - Toggling the "Wifi when using Auto" on/off
 - Explicitly setting Android Auto to NOT use any battery optimizations
 - Multiple USB cables (those that do work, work the same)

Googling around tells me this is a very common, and very rarely resolved issue. People are having Auto freeze/lock up on very wide variety of phones and cars.

This is too bad because when Android Auto does work, it's magnificent, I love all the new things I can do on the car's display. Is there any way to resolve this?

I'd say I have exactly the same problem.
  • Error message: Same, no error message. UI just freezes.
  • Are you using Android Auto on your phone screen or car’s display? Same. Car display, via USB cable.
  • Car / head unit make & model: Hyundai Accent 2018 built in car head.
  • Phone make & model: Xiaomi Mi A2
  • Android OS version: Android 9. August 2019 security patch installed.
  • Android Auto app version: 4.5.592854-release
  • Google Play services version: 17.7.85 (040408-253824076)
Already tried 4 other different cables. The ones that connect eventually lead to the same freezing.

In my case, the time can vary from just 1 minute to almost 20 minutes for the UI to freeze.

Yup, same for me.

Kenwood DDX6905S
Moto x4
Android 9  Build PPWS29.69-39-2-3

Have to unplug the USB cable and replug it back in to get it to work again.

Happening with the old and new AA UI.

Double check with your devices that no app killing processes are active for Android Auto, possibly other things like Maps, your media app, and the Google app. Most non-Google OEMs apply their own app-killing services on top of what AOSP provides: https://dontkillmyapp.com/

Thanks for the advice andy. I own a Xiaomi Android One (Mi A2), so according to the website I shouldn't run into a lot of problems related to app killing. What else do you think I can do to ensure everything related to Android Auto is executing correctly?

Same issue for me as well. Even after I unplug my USB the car's radio interface is frozen and will not reset unless I turn the car off for about 15 mins. I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado using Pixel 3XL with Android 10. It seems to happen when I lose cell service. I switched over to just using Bluetooth only and navigating through my phone in a holder. I like Android Auto when it works but I can't have it freezing on me when I'm navigating and then trying to fix it while driving.

Michele, unfortunately I can't think of anything else than trying other cables, which you have done, or cleaning your port (make sure not to use metal). Other than that, a bug in the car's system may also be to blame, so check if there are any firmware updates for it. For instance my 2016 Mazda 3 has had several updates over its lifetime, and the very latest from a few months ago fixed a nasty bug that affected Android Auto (gave the wrong GPS longitude for a minute, putting my car in China during that time). Also, see on dedicated forums for your device if there are other people having the same issue.

Oneplus 7 Pro, Mazda CX 9. Was working fine until the last update I think. Maps displays on the screen but I cannot do anything on it. Cannot select a place, search etc. I can only use voice commands. Am able to scroll down to the apps section and play songs etc.
