Google Voice Typing erroneously inserts punctuation, arbitrarily capitalizes words, and inserts "oh" 0 Recommended Answers 0 Relevant Answers 52 Replies 156 Upvotes

There are at least two other threads addressing similar issues at the moment, but I wanted to create a thread that addresses all of the major issues I have seen arise with Google Voice Typing, in the hopes that they will be fixed.

First and most severe, as others have reported, within the past two or so days Voice Typing has started to automatically add punctuation during dictation.  Any time I pause even momentarily to find the right words, a period is inserted.  Many people pause during dictation or normal speech to think, and adding a period each time is not a value-added feature for me or many others.  Having to manually delete the periods (and correct the following automatic capital letter) is time-consuming and frustrating.

Second, Voice Typing automatically capitalizes words, and as far as I can tell, it's completely arbitrary.  Earlier I said that I went to the boys and girls basketball game, and Voice Typing output, "the Boys and Girls basketball game."  There is no grammatical reason those words should be capitalized, and going back to correct them makes what should be a time-saving feature even slower.

Finally, about one-third of the time, Voice Typing chooses to add the word "oh" before any comma I dictate by saying "comma."  Most times it correctly places a comma without issue, but other times it outputs "oh,".  This has happened for months, and doesn't seem to correlate to the way I say the word "comma".

These issues occur any time I use the Voice Typing feature, in any app.  They (especially the recent automatic punctuation issue) are making Voice Typing nearly unusable.  I really hope Google will fix these problems, because I and many others rely on Voice Typing to make our lives and Android experience easier, not harder.

Ditto for me regarding exactly everything Mr. Dubois just said! What is going on here and how on Earth did someone - or some godforsaken committee - believe that this new practice of adding a period following every brief pause was a good idea?? Someone at Google needs to take a very. very. long. vacation. And I, too, am occasionally seeing "oh" inserted before places where I clearly say only "comma"; again, why is this happening?? I could understand if I were stuttering before saying "Ohio", but "comma"?? Ridiculous! And, finally, the Extremely Annoying Practice of making Some Words randomly Capitalized has been Going On - and has been Complained About - for Years! What grammatical Einstein thought it somehow made sense that "Etc." should always be capitalized?!? Hey, GOOGLE: PLEASE GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER. You are making the iPhone look like a more attractive alternative with every passing day that you don't address these very legitimate complaints!

And one more thing: please...PLEASE allow users to insert an ellipsis ("...") by simply saying the word "ellipsis". A lot of people use ellipses when writing texts, and it's absurd to have to say "dot dot dot" every time - and more often than not, that doesn't even work! With just a few simple measures, you could go a long way toward making thousands and thousands of loyal users a helluva a lot happier. We waste far too much time making corrections to the flaws you refuse to correct.

There is another thread about this here

This issue is a BIG one. Voice to text used to work perfectly, then the "oh" issue cropped up the this punctuation and capitalization issue. Stop trying to guess what I am thinking, you suck at it.

This is so infuriating because, yeah, it smacks of what is possible my hugest pet-peeve: people assuming something without checking with someone who would know. In other words, arrogance.

I can not imagine there's a person alive who routinely uses Google dictation who thought "It would be a big help to me if, every time I paused for a brief moment, it would insert a period except only sometimes," in addition to the random capitalization, the +"oh,", and the one that makes me craziest (maybe it's just on every one of my Samsung phones any nobody else's) is how the correction menu 1) 99.99% of the time appears UNDER the keyboard, 2) prevents any further typing/deletion if it's on-screen, 3) often contains the stupidest iterations of choices for corrections that are, themselves, insane.

As for "dot dot dot" to get "..."-- I'm okay with it (same number of syllables as ellipsis), except that sometimes, it just writes out "dot dot dot". Randomly.

The automatic punctuation is new.  It's absolutely intolerable.

The "oh" problem has been happening to me for a very long time.  So has the capitalization issue.  My experience has shown that Voice Typing thinks I'm talking about titles or other proper names.  If you do a web search for the word/phrase it capitalized, it will invariably come up as the name of a movie, song, or some other properly named thing that you may or may not have heard of.

I'm having the same issues. Worse is that I watch it type and it clearly gets it right the first time, but replaces it entirely.

Also, Google hears "I want to" as "I wants to". (showing "want" then corrected to "wants" which makes no sense) It refuses to capitalize all names (including my own) except at the begging of a sentence, and some foreign names only work half the time.

I've noticed numerous occasions where perfect grammar is written correctly then automatically changed to poor grammar and/or misspelled words.

Lists of numbers are the worst though. It has no rhyme or reason for how it hears multiple numbers and then puts them on the screen.

My guess is that the AI must have learned a bad grammar rule and so when it hears similar words it changes them to fit its notion of what English should be like. That's stupid.

P. S. - I had to make multiple corrections when using voice to text in this very reply. For example, the phrase "grammar rule" had a capital r on Rule and "this very reply" had a capital r on reply. The phrase "rhyme or reason" had a capital r on rhyme and reason and tapping the underlined gave me the option of using a lowercase rhyme, but I couldn't get a lowercase reason without changing or to not meaning I had to manually fix it.

I feel like Google is ruining grammar across-the-board.
