How do I fix the back camera?
0
My phone updated on its own while I was away. What it changed I'm not sure. But ever since then, the back camera has stopped working. The selfie camera works fine, but the other remains a black screen, even going as far as crashing some apps, like Messages+ and Discord. Nothing I have tried has fixed the issue, and I need it for future classes. I honestly don't know what on earth happened. I need help with this fast. This is on Android Version 9 by the way.

Hi Supalee. You could try troubleshooting the camera app using the procedure offered in the Help Centre here: https://support.google.com/android/answer/2668665?hl=en-GB&ref_topic=7340498

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I tried much of what was there except for the hard reset and battery removal. From what it looks, it isn't an issue with the camera app as much as it is the camera function itself.

Hi Supalee. It sounds as though it may be time for the phone to be examined by a professional to determine whether or not the camera needs to be repaired/replaced.

Sorry that software troubleshooting was of no help.

My Pixel 2 XL is doing the same since the last update. Camera app opens and crashes but it's both cameras. There are also a lot of reviews being left in the Google Camera app in the store. It's not a hardware issue, it's software. In safe mode it works. 1 out of 50 times opening the camera it works.

I've rebooted, tried in safe mode (it worked), cleared cache, uninstalled updates, reinstalled updates.

My Pixel 2xl camera started crashing(both f and b) on 2.7.20.  I took a good pic that morning but then it as crashy crashy and is still to this day.  Cleared caches, factory resent after backing up all things.....  Still doesn't work.  wtf, mate.

Hi Chris. If the camera works correctly and consistently while in Safe Mode where only the stock apps will be active, that is a good indication that one or more of your third-party apps is causing the issue and you will need to isolate and deal with the culprit(s) accordingly.

Please let us know how you get on.

Well, the fact that after a factory reset without any 3rd party apps installed and it's still broken; on top of there's a lot of other complaints from Pixel 2 XL users saying the same thing (that their phone cameras broke after a Google Camera app update or after the OS update) leads me to believe that that is incorrect.

Edit: by the way, prior to factory reset - none of the steps in your link worked. To include contacting the app's developer (which would be Google). ;)

  • Reboot phone multiple times
  • Force close, clear cache and data on camera app
  • uninstall updates didn't work
  • reinstall updates didn't work
  • Safe mode worked, regular mode crashed. At times the camera opens for a brief second and then crashes, other times it's a black screen
  • remove permissions on all apps that have access to the camera
  • factory reset didn't work and updating camera app after factory reset didn't work
Afterwards, as requested, I replicated the issue and sent log files (why didn't Google customer service ask for this BEFOREHAND?)

My pixel 2 back camera stopped working as well after a Jan/Feb update. This is a well know issue impacting many pixel users. None of the camera ' fix' steps work.

My system log said it was related to a java null pointer exception. Occasionally I can get the camera to work.

This really seems to be a software issue and I don't understand why Google will not admit it.  Many of us are being told it's out of warranty and need to pay to fix it.

If this isn't resolved I'll never buy Google again

Same here it's a common issue for all the pixel 2xl holders. I am facing the same issue both cameras are not working. Google should acknowledge the error and fix it asap. I am a makeup artist professional and this camera helps a lot if this software issue is not fixed I will definitely sue Google for this.
