Seeing this on a first-generation Moto G. Got repeated popup reporting that "Gboard has stopped." Made the mistake of rebooting -- can't unlock the phone because Gboard won't open to let me type.

Update: I plugged my phone in to its charger, rebooted it again, and left it overnight.  This morning, Gboard was working again.  I've switched to a pattern lock as a precaution.

BismillAllah ,

Hi all This worked for me , Go to Googleplay and install Gboard again.

You may have to dis-able Gboard in settings-apps first.as it will not allow you to stop or clear Cache as is trying to compute.

Thanks to S.Singh for pointing in the right direction.

I've just restarted my phone is Safe mode to see if Gboard would work in it, it still doesn't. Is it some kind of a wide-spread Andrpoid software issue or is it my phone? I've had this phone for almost 3 years and had never had this problem until today.

Just updated my Google Nexus 7 where I could not get a keyboard and the message 'Gboard has stopped' kept showing onscreen using voice command. Go to Play Store, click on voice icon top right and a box will open. Speak into the device saying 'update google Gboard' and a new box will appear with  'update'. Click on this and it will update and install.
Worked for me. Just a reminder though that you may have to switch device off and on again to reset after update.

For everyone who's locked out of their phones/tablets being unable to type the password, as I was, try this (although I'm not sure that this was what resolved my problem, maybe a coincidence? but the problem went away after I did it): on your computer, go to your Google account, sign in, go to Google Play and find Gboard. This is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin
Even though it says that it's already installed on your mobile device (as it was in mine), click on the green button Installed. I did it, then restarted my phone and gboard was working again!

Hi Cedrik. Do you mean you are locked out because your on-screen keyboard doesn't appear? If so you may find the solution in previous posts here, ie/install Swiftkey via a PC as advised by another poster here.

If you are locked out for another reason, please search for another thread on the same subject or if you're unable to find one, please start one of your own. This thread refers to GBoard problems.

Thank you.

I got this message when I turned on my phone this morning and not being tech savvy didn't have a clue what to do.  I went online on my computer and typed in the "gboard has stopped" and thanks to Satyavir's suggestion, I tried that and it worked.  The loss of texting wasn't so important, but I was panicked at not being able to use a keyboard for signing into things, American Airlines app, for example.  But I'm thankful in reading other replies that I don't have my phone passworded to even use it.

Guys, if you can't unlock your device, you can't try this: on an alternative device, go to play.google.com (login with the same account you have on your device) chose a keyboard on Play Store (anyone) and install it remotely. As soon as it downloads, try to use it. If it doesn't work on the first time, try to restart the device.

I hope it solves the issue.
