Force connection to 2.4Ghz wifi

I'm trying to add a new smart home device. It requires a 2.4Ghz WiFi connection. I'm using a pixel 5 Android 12 (build SQ1A.211205.008) and Google WiFi. I have no settings in the Google home WiFi app to turn the wi-fi to 2.4Ghz only. Since the latest update to android there is also no setting I can find in my wi-fi options to choose a 2.4Ghz connection for the setup process.  I've tried several 3rd party apps which worked previously but these all fail to force connection to the 2.4Ghz signal too.

Am I right in thinking that Google have managed to make my smart home incompatible with half the smart devices on the market?  Are they aware of this issue and will there be a fix soon?

Helen,

It is likely that this issue is related to the update to Android 12.  Regardless, as the issue is occurring in Google WiFi it will need to be approached via Google Nest.  If there's a conflict, a glitch, a bug, whatever, it will first need to be recognized by Google Nest and, if needed, worked out with Android from their end.

I have managed to connect the device using its AP mode.  I'm still curious about the reason behind the removal of this functionality though.

Hello Helen Skinner,

Welcome to the Android Community forum.

There have been no changes in the way available WiFi connections are displayed in Android 12.  I have a Pixel 4a, a Pixel 5, and a Pixel 6 Pro, all of which are on Android 12.  I have a number of smart devices connected to my home network's 2.4GHz band, including my home's thermostat, multiple smart plugs,  speakers, TV, lights, doorbell, etc.

The options for selecting a WiFi network are clearly visible, including both bands available on my home network's dual band WiFi router, e.g., 5GHz and 2.4GHz, basically pretty much as outlined in the article at the below link:

A smart device should be capable of locating and connecting to the 2.4GHz band.

Thanks for the response, unfortunately, the Google WiFi that we have does not create 2 separate SSIDs, they are both the same.  There are no settings in the Google home WiFi area to change this, or select only 5GHz or only 2.4GHz. The phone must see both and only present the 5G option to the user. There has been a change as previously it was possible to use a third party app to select which network you wanted to connect to. When I look in WiFi analyser they are both still there, with different MAC addresses, but I cannot actively connect to the 2.4GHz connection.

Helen,

You're very welcome.

This ongoing issue with Google WiFi would best be addressed in the Google Nest Help Community:

See the help articles in the WiFi section.  If you don't find a solution there, then scroll down to the bottom of that page and use the "Contact us" button to connect with Google Support.

NOTE:  Several attempts may be required in order to connect with Support as some Google Support locations are unavailable due to a natural disaster, please persist until you reach Support.

But it worked before the latest Android update so it's not a WiFi problem! Admittedly it's a confluence of 2 Google products both thinking they know best and removing options, but here I'm talking about the fact that you can no longer specify the WiFi connection you want in android if your mesh is broadcasting 2.4GHz and 5GHz using the same SSID.
