How do you change the lock screen clock format on Android 12 to something usable (horizontal)?
1
In searching there doesn't seem to be a current solution and is hope there's an update.  I'm just leaving my screen off and turning on to check the time as that's less cognitive load versus interpreting the unconventional clock layout (on the plus side, I might go back to wearing a watch...).

Penny,
I have a feeling they are going to get a lot of feedback. This UI is atrocious and practically no longer customizable. Something Android used to pride itself on.

Smart lock screen clock looks more like a Calendar or random lottery numbers.

Is that a f****** date or some freaking numbers at a casino? Definitely isn't a f****** clock

I don't mind the size, but the bizarre two-line format is impossible to read at a glance, which is the entire point of the lock screen clock.  Please just give an option to have the time on one line like every digital clock I have ever used before.

This format gives me anxiety, as does having the time change position when there are notifications. This is a huge (HUGE) misstep. Judging by the dozens of articles and forums I've already visited this morning looking for a solution, and the community of like minded angry users, I hope this is something the devs allow customization of (sooner rather than later)

I hate this OS so much I snapped my phone in half and went back to my old one. Miss the camera, but screw google. I would go buy the iPhone if the stupid thing had a fingerprint scanner. I really have no clue what to do for a phone now. I refuse to use this hideous OS they call android 12.

The lockscreen clock is awful! Who thought both moving it around based on notifications AND switching it between a normal horizontal layout and a weird ass square makes any kind of sense?

The Android 12 lock screen clock is simply awful and needs to be customizable.

It is very disappointing that there is no option to change the clock format.

At a glance it looked like my phone was hacked, or suffering some kind of software bug.  Searching for answers leads to responses like this, where people find out it is one of the new "features".  I've seen where there is a workaround using some kind of persistent app notification, but basic OS settings should not have to rely on a 3rd party.

This is so bad that I need to either roll back the Android version, or if it's not fixed by the end of the week I'll make my iOS device my primary.  Also need a button for on/off of mobile data that isn't under an extra internet button.  This update is terrible, wtf were you thinking?!

The lock screen clock and the giant buttons in settings are absolutely terrible.  Was this UI refresh designed for 5 year olds?  Give us the option to change / revert.  Thankfully, my 3rd party launcher hides most of the horrors of this UI, but the lock screen is unchangeable

Settings.  Display.  Screen saver.  If you go to analogue. It goes to straight XX:XX top left corner and isn't as ugly.

Agreed the default clock is next to useless. And for some reason analog isn't a clock face with hands.  Something that at a glance really helps with or people with visual impairments.

Astonished myself it sucks this bad.  Usually improvements are just that. An improvement.  Not a lack of features and ugly font with little to no functionality.  Even a fake digital 8 font with 88:88 would be better.  Are you listening google?
marked this as an answer
Relevant Answer
Ridiculous default look.  A digital time without a colon (:) is a bunch of numbers that could be a date or anything else. Also, I hate pointlessly large fonts as "look". Keep it sane and practical by default.

Also, if I have an alarm set, it shows right below the actual date, and show like an actual time with a colon. So my alarm looks more like the current time than the actual time does. Change it.

On the plus side, I can FINALLY see the full date without it being cut off with my 120% default font.

Bad design.  Not appropriate for a clock.  It looks like a math problem with no solution.  Try a traditional, normal clock option.  Don't try to fix something that works.  You had traditional digital clocks before, so it can't be that tough to include again.

Yeah it's absolutely horrible. I have no idea why they wouldn't just make it so you can choose which way you'd like to display it (one row or two). This whole update is garbage. It makes the phone look like something for someone who's really old or has large fingers. I don't see why any of this is required to be the default (that you can't change mind you).

I sent some feedback. Hopefully if they get enough complaints about it they'll actually do something.

This is awful. I have dyslexia and now I just can't read the clock. The only workaround is to keep an app running into the background with a sticky notification.

Isn't android supposed to be customizable?
marked this as an answer

Why would you try to redesign a digital clock away from a format that literally everyone in the world is used to looking at a digital clock? Why are you fixing what isn't broken, and even worse than that, why isn't there an option to have a normal looking digital clock on the lock screen?

I'm actually shocked that this was put out to the market, and I'm extremely disappointed in the lack of customization available for something as simple as the format in which the time is displayed.

What were you thinking?

marked this as an answer

I agree with the haters. This new lock screen clock is stupid as are the bubble formated numbers on the calculator and calendar and alarm clock.
Someone needs to tell your devs that it is possible to add a new feature to something without redesigning the entire GUI in the process.   I bought a google phone because Samsung used to force all of this nonsense into their devices, but google was "customizable" and free from bloatware and forced updates of nonsense.  The past couple of updates make it appear that situation has drastically changed.

I cannot stand this clock. It's not intuitive or useful. Who puts a line break between the hour and minutes? In ANY use case????? Weird design choice. Did users actually test and like this "feature"?
marked this as an answer

I really have to just mimic what others have said above. I don't understand why this isn't a choice for users. Interaction design fundamentals try to avoid frustrating users provided the option doesn't reduce safety or cause problems. This really doesn't come close to being a necessary change and given how unusual the format is doesn't follow consistency practices for interaction design either. I would have thought the people behind design changes and software updates at Google/Android would at least be aware of the basics.

Can't believe this clock made it into the official release. Who displays time like that? Such a headache to get the time at quick glance. Tired of looking for "fixes" that don't exist. My phone just updated yesterday, and I spent hours trying to find a fix for it.  There are none. Unless you want to keep old notifications on your lock screen. Or install some battery eating app.

So far it seems that Android 12 is a significant downgrade in usability.  Beside the bizarre clock format, why does it now take 3 clicks to enable/disable Wifi or mobile data?  And why did they make the quick-access icons at the top of the screen so much larger that you can only see 4 icons instead of 6?

The whole thing is ridiculous.  I hate that  I have only four huge "things" on the top to use Bluetooth or the other stuff I need, like do not disturb.  So an extra step for everything.  The must have had a second grader design this format.  The clock is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever seen.  NORMAL people look at a clock as 12:15.  I want Android 11 back NOW!

I tried lots of things. Finally found an ad-free weather app that actually shows a customizable weather widget on the lock screen. It's called Weawow - Weather & Widget.  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.weawow
It's so customizable, it'll take you a while to see all the options.
The other solution on the web is to download the Persistent Notifications app. But someone said that when they close the app, the notifications disappear. This is what happened when I tried the Transparent weather app.
But with WeaWow, this doesn't happen. You can keep the app closed, but it'll still show the widget on the lock screen.
