Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing

On some phones, you can get info about how you spend time on your phone, like how often you unlock it and how long you use each app. You can use that info to improve your digital wellbeing. For example, you can set app timers and schedule display changes.

Set up Digital Wellbeing

To find Digital Wellbeing as an app, open it in your Settings app and then turn on Show icon in the app list.

The first time you open Digital Wellbeing, you need to set up your profile.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  3. Under “Your Digital Wellbeing tools,” tap Show your data.

Add the screen time widget

Use the screen time widget to find the top 3 apps you use each day.

On Android 9 and later devices:

  1. Touch and hold the Home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets .
  3. Touch and hold the screen time widget. You’ll get images of your Home screens.
  4. Pull the widget where you want it and lift your finger.

Manage your time in apps

Find out how much time you spend in apps
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  3. The chart shows your phone use today. For more info, tap the chart. For example:
    • Screen time: What apps you've had on screen and for how long
    • Unlocks: How often you've unlocked your phone and opened certain apps
    • Notifications: How many notifications you've gotten and from which apps
  4. To get more info or change app settings, tap a listed app.
Limit how much time you spend in an app each day

Important: Some work and school accounts might not work with app timers.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  3. Tap the chart.
  4. Next to the app you want to limit, tap Set timer .
  5. Choose how much time you can spend in that app. Then, tap Set.
Tip: When you run out of time, the app closes and its icon dims. Keep in mind:
  • App timers reset at midnight.
  • To use the app again before midnight, follow steps 1–4 above and delete the app timer.

Manage your time on Google Chrome

Find out how much time you spend on websites
  1. Open your Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  3. Tap the chart And then Chrome Chrome.
    • If you don’t find it right away, tap Show all apps.
  4. Scroll and tap Show sites you visit And then Show. You’ll find the websites you visited and how much time you used them each day.
  5. To get more info about the time you’ve spent on a site, tap it.

Hide past site visits

To stop showing past visits to a website, tap the site on the list. At the bottom, tap Remove past visits And then Remove. If you go to the site in the future, it will show on the list again.

Limit how much time you spend on a website each day
  1. Open your Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  3. Tap the chart And then Chrome Chrome.
    • If you don’t find it right away, tap Show all apps.
  4. Next to the website you want to limit, tap Set site timer .
  5. Choose a time limit, then tap OK.

Sleep better with Bedtime mode

How to set a bedtime routine
  1. On your phone, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls and then Bedtime mode and then Bedtime routine.
  3. Choose when Bedtime mode will turn on.
  4. Create a bedtime routine out of two ways:
    • Based on a schedule: Set the start and end times of your sleep and your preferred days of the week.
    • While charging at bedtime: Set "After," and "Before," times, and charge your phone during that time frame.
Customize your settings with Bedtime mode
  • Do Not Disturb for Bedtime mode: Learn how to avoid interruptions.
  • Turn off Bedtime at next alarm: Turns Bedtime mode off at your next alarm. If no alarm is set, Bedtime mode will turn off at the scheduled time or when you stop charging your device, depending on your routine.

You can also customize your Screen options at bedtime:

  • Grayscale: Changes your screen to black and white.
  • Keep the screen dark: Turns off the always-on display at bedtime.
  • Dim the wallpaper: Dims your wallpaper and lock screen at bedtime.
  • Dark theme: Makes your screen background black at bedtime. If you choose this option, "Dark theme," is used only when Bedtime mode is on.

Tip: To quickly turn Bedtime mode on and off, use quick settings. Learn how to quickly change common settings.

Temporarily pause distracting apps
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls and then Focus mode.
  3. Choose which apps you want to pause. When Focus mode is on, you can't use these apps and won't get notifications from them.
  4. Use Focus mode when you want to avoid distractions.
    • To turn Focus mode on or off, at the top, tap Turn on now or Turn off now.
    • To have Focus mode turn on automatically, tap Set a schedule.
    • To temporarily unpause apps when Focus mode is on, tap Take a break and choose a time limit.
