Control your notifications
Depending what notifications you want, you can change settings for certain apps or for your whole device.

Use notifications
- To keep a notification, swipe it up.
- To clear one notification, swipe it left or right.
- To clear all notifications, scroll to the bottom of your notifications
tap Clear all.
- To snooze a notification, drag it slightly left or right
tap Snooze
. To pick a length of time, tap the Down arrow
.
- To act directly from a notification, tap an action, like Reply or Archive.
- To expand a notification, tap the Down arrow
.
- To open the app that sent a notification, tap the notification. (On your lock screen, double tap.)
Tip: From notification dots, you can tap only the oldest notification. Clear each to show the next.
You can't clear some notifications right away. These notifications clear when they're done.
For example:
- You can clear a music player notification after you stop the music.
- A system update notification clears when you install the update.
- A notification that an app is using battery clears when the app stops using battery. To clear the notification sooner, touch and hold it.
Choose how you're notified
- Open your device's Settings app

- Under "App notifications," see how many apps have notifications turned off.
- Pick the options you want as your device's defaults.

Option 1: In the Settings app
- Open your device's Settings app

- Tap Apps & notifications
Notifications
App notifications.
- Tap an app.
- Turn Notifications on or off.
- Turn Allow notification dot on or off.
- If the app has notification categories:
- You can turn notifications of a category on or off.
- You can tap a category for more options, like Sound, Vibrate, Show notification dot, Blink light, and Override Do Not Disturb.
Option 2: On a notification
To change the settings of the app that sent the notification:
- On notifications from the top of your screen, drag the notification slightly right or left
tap Settings
.
- From a notification dot, touch and hold the app
tap Info
.
Option 3: In the certain app
Many apps let you control notifications from a settings menu in the app. For example, an app could have a setting to choose the sound the app's notifications make.
On some devices, like Pixel phones, some apps show a dot when you get notifications. Touch and hold the app with the dot to see the notification.
To turn notification dots on or off for your device:
- Open your device's Settings app

- Turn Allow notification dots on or off.

Control how notifications show on your locked screen
You can block all notifications from your lock screen. You'll see your notifications only when your device is unlocked.
- Open your device's Settings app

- Tap Apps & notifications
Notifications.
- Tap On the lock screen
Don't show notifications at all.
If you pick this option as your default, the setting applies to all apps. To block notifications from certain apps only, learn how to change notifications by app.
You can see all notification content on your lock screen by default.
- Open your device's Settings app

- Tap Apps & notifications
Notifications.
- Tap On the lock screen
Show all notification content.
If you pick this option as your default, you can still restrict certain apps on your lock screen. You can have certain apps "Hide sensitive notification content" or "Don't show notifications at all" on your lock screen. Learn how to change notifications by app.
You can stop sensitive notification content from showing on your lock screen.

If you pick this option as your default, you can still restrict certain apps to "Don't show notifications at all" on your lock screen. Learn how to change notifications by app.
Limit interruptions
Some notifications briefly show over your screen while you're doing something else. For example, an email notification could appear while you're watching a video.

To turn off notifications of messages sent to you from messaging apps that you don’t have:
- Open your device’s Settings app
.
- Tap Google
App preview messages.
- Turn off App preview messages. Tap OK.
