Can't transfer data to a new Android device

If something goes wrong while you copy data from your old device to your new Android device during setup, try these troubleshooting steps.

Important: Some of these steps may vary based on your device.

Setup stops or doesn't start

You lose power or get disconnected
  • If the cable is disconnected or the battery runs out, most of the time the process can be re-started. Recharge your devices and try again.
  • If you recharge your devices and it still doesn't work, you can try to transfer again from Settings after setup. If you don't see an option to do that, you may have to factory reset your device and try again.

Tips:

  • If you use a cable to transfer, make sure your devices are fully charged before you start.
  • If one is available, use a wireless charger to keep your devices plugged into each other and charged during the transfer process.
Nothing happens when you plug in a cable or you get "Try another cable" message

Check the cable

Unplug the cable, wait a few seconds, and then replug the cable on both ends. If that doesn't work, try another cable.

Check the adapter

The adapter may be plugged into the wrong device. Try to plug the adapter into the other device instead.

Check the charging port on your old device

There may be a build-up of debris that doesn't let the cable make a connection.

If none of these work, try the Wi-Fi transfer method.

You get "device may not be supported" message
  1. Install any available updates for your current device.
  2. Restart your current device.
  3. Try a cable transfer again. If that still doesn't work with your current device, learn how to transfer without a cable from Android or iPhone.
Setup transfer is stuck
  1. If setup gets stuck for more than 15 minutes, tap Stop copying.
  2. When you get "Copying's done," find out which data copied.
Can't scan the QR code for transferring data

Transferring from an Android device to an Android device

If you were presented with a QR code to pair your devices, this step is required in order to transfer data from an old device. If you cannot scan the QR code, follow these steps to connect using a pairing code instead:

  1. Find the setup notification on your old device and tap Set up.
  2. On the screen that says "Scan the QR code page on your new device," tap Try another way.
  3. Verify that the codes match on both devices and tap Next

If you do not see the setup notification on your old device, tap Skip on your new device. You will have options later to restore data from a cloud backup instead.

Transferring from an iOS device to an Android device

Only certain Android devices can transfer with a QR code at the beginning of the setup flow. If you’re transferring from an iOS device that’s running on iOS 26.5 or earlier, you may not be able to transfer with a QR code.

If you’re using a compatible Android and iPhone device and still have trouble scanning the QR code:

  1. Tap Pair your devices manually on the screen.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to open your iPhone’s Settings app to find the session ID and pairing code.
  3. Enter that information on your Android device to connect your devices.

If you don’t get the QR code when you’re first setting up your Android device, you can still transfer data with a cable or with the Android Switch app.

  • Transferring data with a cable does not require a QR code, so you should be all set.
  • If you have trouble scanning the QR code shown in order to run the Android Switch app, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 15 or later and that you are connected to the internet. If the QR code isn’t taking you to the App Store in order to download the Android Switch app, on your iPhone, you can go to: g.co/android/sta to manually download the app. You’ll then need to scan the QR code with the Android Switch app in order to connect the two devices.
Can't transfer over Wi-Fi

Only certain devices can transfer over Wi-Fi. If you can’t transfer over Wi-Fi or if your Wi-Fi is slow, you can try transferring with a cable.

Transferring from an Android device to an Android device

Your Android device will automatically recommend the best transfer method available. If your device doesn’t support wireless transfer, or if your connection is slow, you may be asked to connect a cable. Follow the on-screen instructions to plug in your cable and proceed with the data transfer.

If you skipped the QR code scanning step, most devices will take you directly to a cloud restore instead. If you still want to transfer data directly from your previous device, go back to the pairing step and scan the QR code.

Transferring from an iOS device to an Android device

If you are trying to transfer wirelessly using the QR code shown to you at the beginning of the setup process:

  1. Connect your iPhone to a wifi network and make sure that the wifi network allows discovery of other devices.
  2. If that doesn’t work, while your Android device is showing the QR code, you can try connecting a cable between devices to force a wired connection.
  3. After plugging in a cable, scan the QR code and try again.
  4. If that still doesn’t work, tap Copy data another way. You’ll be instructed to transfer using a cable using the classic switching flow.

If you’re trying to transfer over Wifi using the Android Switch app, make sure your old device is an iPhone with iOS 15 or later.

  1. After you connect the devices wirelessly, accept the on-screen prompts to join the network.
  2. During data transfer, if you see messages on the iPhone telling you that the network doesn’t have internet access, tap Keep trying Wi-Fi .

Setup finished but data didn't copy

You skipped data transfer when first turned on

If you skipped the option to transfer your data during the initial device setup, you may need to return to the setup depending on how long you’ve had your new Android device.

To return to setup after a few days:

  1. On your new Android device, open the Settings app.
  2. At the top, tap Finish setting up.
  3. If that doesn't work, swipe from the top of your Android device to show your notifications and tap Finish setting up your device.

Tip: These options may only be available for some device manufacturers.

You can also transfer data at any time after your setup. If you already transferred data during initial setup, any additional data must come from that same device.

  1. On your Android device, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Accounts & backup and select the option to copy data from another device.
    • This option is available for all devices running Android 17 and later as well as select devices running previous versions of Android.
    • If this option isn't available, there may be another option within Settings that allows you to transfer data. If not, you may have to factory reset your device in order to transfer data within setup.

Tip: Some device manufacturers may have more tools or options to help transfer your data after you set up your device. Visit the manufacturer’s support site to learn more.

Why some data may not have transferred from an iPhone

Learn which data types can be transferred from iPhone to Android.

iPhone supervised by an organization

If a business, school, or organization supervises your iPhone, some of your data can't be copied.

Photos, videos & music

  • The file format isn't supported.
  • The transfer process was interrupted.
  • Some photos and videos are in iCloud. Learn how to request your photos and videos from iCloud.
    • You can also try to download Google Photos onto your iPhone, turn on backups, and wait for all the data to back up. This could take several days, and it's best to keep the device turned on with Google Photos open while it happens.

Apps

  • Only apps available at no cost can be transferred.
    • To learn more about how to transfer the app to a new device, visit the developer's website.
  • Some apps may not be available in your region.
  • Some apps may not be available in the Play Store.

Messages or WhatsApp chats & data

  • Some messages were sent with a feature that isn't supported on Android devices.
  • If you used the upgraded switching process and didn’t get WhatsApp messages transferred, remember to complete the extra steps after setup to complete this process. Learn more about transferring WhatsApp data.
  • If you are transferring data after setup, do not open or use WhatsApp on your new device before the transfer. If you’ve already opened or set up WhatsApp, you must uninstall and reinstall the app, or clear its storage, before transfer.

Contacts or calendar events

Only contacts and calendar events that aren't synced to an account are transferred. If it's synced to an account, it won't transfer during setup. To re-sync the information to your Android device, sign in to your associated account in Settings.
