Referral Traffic Registering As Direct Traffic 0 Recommended Answers 7 Replies 21 Upvotes

I have two websites – (A) luckyvoice.com and (B) luckyvoicekaraoke.com. There is a specific page I've added to A to drive traffic to B but B is currently registering that traffic as direct instead of referral so I can't see the exact figures regarding how well it has worked. The particularly odd thing is that there are a few other places on different pages where A refers to B that B is tracking properly in GA.

Have had a look through a few other support tickets and most of the answers regarded a https failing to track referrals from a http which isn't the case as both websites are https. Have also checked the referral exclusion list of both websites' GA account and there's nothing there that could be causing this problem.

Any guidance on this issue would be hugely appreciated!

A link to that specific page would be helpful for troubleshooing

Sorry, should have included that!

This is the page on website A: https://www.luckyvoice.com/online

And it directs people straight to the homepage of B: https://www.luckyvoicekaraoke.com/

Thank you!

Hey... I can see in the button code on site A that rel="noopener" is set.

<a class="lv-button" href="https://www.luckyvoicekaraoke.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">visit now</a>

Wordpress adds this automatically to any link that you set to open in a new tab, they say this is for security reasons: https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/what-is-relnoopener-in-wordpress-explained/

It is often accompanied by 'noreferrer' although not in your case (as of today, anyway).
noreferrer would cause the effect you were seeing, with referrals replaced by Direct in GA reporting.

I don't know if that was there when you created this ticket and you've since removed it?
If not, I'd test updating the link to open in the same tab so that 'noopener' is removed from the code (hard to see any benefit in opening it in a new tab anyway?)

Cheers
Dan

@Shubham 786 - please start your own thread relevant to your issue rather than hijacking someone elses help thread.

You looked in all the obvious spots.
1. https downgrade
2. referral exclusion
3. noreferrer on link as pointed out by Daniel Ayers

I tested the link in dev tools and the proper referrer header was coming through...

How do you know it is being attributed to the direct channel? As direct shows no referral path.
