Strange 'active users on site' vs 'active users' 0 Recommended Answers 6 Replies 4 Upvotes

Hello,

The last few weeks I've been noticing a common issue with several of my websites are different times during the day. I will see a large number of 'active users on site' that doesn't match the current 'active users' on pages.

I've attached a screenshot for clarification, does anyone know what is going on?

Thanks so much,
Michael.

Hi, keep in mind, an active user may not necessarily be active due to a pageview hit, they may have fired an event or some other engagement hit which is seeing them still as an active user.. but not necessarily reporting a pageview hit.

Active users are those who have sent a hit to Analytics within the last five minutes.
Active users per page is the number of users who have sent their most recent hit from that page.

Majority of the traffic appears to be mobile.
Mobile hits are batched to conserve battery life. Batching typically occurs on the order of minutes.

Yes, we're seeing something similar to what Michael is experiencing. As of right now here's what we're seeing:
  • It says 457 "Right now 457 active users on site" (going up almost every few seconds, I think when I first logged in, it was in the 300's...)
  • Below it has only 12 active users "Metric Total"
  • Under Page Views from the last 30 minutes, it shows 339 users.
And after typing the above, it now shows only "11" Right Now 11 active users on site", with 18 as the number for the "Metric Total"

I think this is a Google Analytics bug and this has only recently happened. Or changed the calculation rules or definitions of some fields.

Hi,

We have the same issue, there is only 5 users online but the active users shows 48. This jump is sudden.
It can be ghost servers and spam hits which is targeting google analytics directly by using your tracking code.
We have an internal analytics which didn't record anything and it could be because they don't even visit your web page!
