Attribute original source after redirect to 3rd party domain and back 0 Recommended Answers 3 Replies 6 Upvotes

I have a situation where users first arrive to our own domain, are then redirected to a 3rd party website (where we're not able to implement any code) to finalize an action and are then sent back to our domain to a "Thank you"-page.

So: Our domain -> 3rd party domain -> Our domain

I want to track a conversion on the "Thank you"-page visit, and I want to attribute the conversion to the source/medium/campaign that got them to our domain in the first place.

I know the basics of cross-domain tracking, but unfortunately we can't implement any code on the 3rd party domain.

I also know I can exclude the domain from referrals in Analytics, but will that solve my problem? Based on the information provided here https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2795830?hl=en&ref_topic=6010375, excluding a 3rd party domain will still trigger a new session, which I imagine will break my conversion attribution?

Basically, I'd like to ignore the user's visit to the 3rd party domain all together, if that makes sense.

Best regards,
Leo

You could save the campaign information by yourself in a cookie when a user enters your page for the first time and when the user comes back to the thank-you page, extract the information from your cookie and pass it to the Google Analytics hit which tracks the conversion

Using the referral exclusion list is the correct way to do this.
It will trigger a new session but will not break the attribution/referral info as those visits redirected back to the thank you page from the 3rd party site will be marked as direct/(none) and Google Analytics uses the last non-direct click method for attribution.

Leo - did you find a solution to this? We have the same process and am hoping to achieve what you were trying to do. Thanks!
