Segment affiliate traffic into an affiliate channel grouping based on URL parameters
Affiliate traffic is most often tagged using a URL parameter. Using this understanding, it is possible to tag traffic with an affiliate parameter in order to send it into the proper channel grouping.
Ensure that affiliate traffic is tagged using a URL parameter
All affiliate traffic should be tagged with a URL parameter. This example will use the parameter affiliate-id
.
Traffic from affiliates should therefore be in the form of
http://mysite.com?affiliate-id=12345
In this case, 12345
is the id associated with a particular affiliate, but this could be any string or numerical sequence.
Create a custom dimension to hold the affiliate parameter value
Create a session-scoped custom dimension called
affiliate id
Extract the affiliate parameter into a custom dimension
Using view filters to extract the parameter into a dimension
Modify the channel grouping for affiliate channel
to look to the custom dimension in order to properly classify the traffic
