[GA4] Add primary and secondary dimensions

Change the dimensions on a detail report to dissect your data

Dimensions are descriptive attributes of your data. They're usually text as opposed to numbers. For example, the Browser dimension describes the browser someone uses to access your website (such as "Chrome"). By default, a detail report includes a table with a series of metrics based on a given dimension.

This article describes how to change the dimensions on a detail report.

Change the primary dimension

The primary dimension is the first dimension in a table. Each metric in the table shows data based on this dimension.

To change the primary dimension in a table:

  1. Click the first drop down above the table.
  2. Browse the list of dimensions, or enter all or part of the dimension name in the search box.
  3. Choose the dimension you want to apply to the table.

Add a secondary dimension

You can add a secondary dimension to a table to investigate data across two dimensions.

To add a secondary dimension to a table:

  1. Click Plus next to the first drop down above the table.
  2. Browse the list of dimensions, or enter all or part of the dimension name in the search box.
  3. Choose the dimension you want to apply to the table.

Example

The following table has a primary dimension of Event name and a secondary dimension of Session source / medium. The third value under the Event count column shows the number of times users, who landed on the site from Google Search, triggered the view_item_list event. If you were to remove the secondary dimension, the third value in the column would show the number of times users triggered the view_item_list event.
