Check your web tracking code setup

Make sure you're collecting data, and seeing it in your reports.

There are a few ways you can check to see if the Google Analytics tracking code on your website is working. If you don’t think it's working correctly, try one of the options below to check your setup, or set up the web tracking code again.

In this article:

Check your Real-Time reports

With the Real-Time reports, you can monitor user activity as it happens. If you see data in these reports, it means that your tracking code is currently collecting data.

  1. Sign in to your Analytics account.
  2. Navigate to a view in the property to which you added the tracking code. If you only recently added the tracking code to this property (website), it is likely that there will only be one view.
  3. Select the Reporting tab.
  4. Select Real-Time > Overview.

Use Google Tag Assistant to verify your setup

Google Tag Assistant is a free Chrome browser extension that shows you if Google Analytics tags are firing correctly. Using Google Tag Assistant, you can record user flows on your website and then view a report of all the hits sent during that flow, as well as how Google Analytics interprets them.

Not only will Google Tag Assistant show you that your tracking code is working, but you can also use it to make sure a particular user journey shows up inside Google Analytics as you expect. The image below shows an example of the kinds of errors Google Tag Assistant can reveal:
