Detailed process for programmatic native

Here’s the detailed process for adding native styles for Ad Exchange:

All publisher implementations of programmatic native ads with Ad Exchange must adhere to specific guidelines (for native styles and custom rendering). Please take a look at these guidelines to see the allowable native UI customizations, which are aligned with Ad Exchange policy. These guidelines do not apply to direct-sold native ads.
  1. Link your Ad Exchange account to DFP
In Ad Exchange, link your Ad Exchange account to DFP. Under your account settings, enable third-party access.
  2. Create ad units if needed
You can either create new ad units or use existing ones as you normally would. Under “Sizes”, select Fixed size and then select pixel sizes or "Fluid" if you want to enable responsive slots for native ads.
  3. Add Ad Exchange-eligible native styles using custom CSS.
A native style is not the actual ad; it’s the ad layout “styling” that the targeted ad unit uses when the actual native creative is requested. Target these native styles to various ad units and/or key-values. For example, your ad might look one way on your homepage and another way on your category page. You’ll need to select a system-defined native ad format for which you want to create native styles. Each native style has a size (either standard or fluid) that determines where your native line item will deliver. We recommend selecting a template that determines the look and feel of the ad, and you can then modify the CSS as needed. Learn more.
  4. Create an order and Ad Exchange line item as you normally would.
Add the special “Native” size on the Ad Exchange line item in addition to its standard banner sizes. We strongly recommend you have banners compete with native ads to maximize performance. We also recommend using a single Ad Exchange line item, as having multiple competing Ad Exchange line items may reduce yield. A single Ad Exchange native line item will deliver to all sizes for which you have configured Ad Exchange-eligible native styles. Learn more.
  5. Target native ads with rules
In Ad Exchange, set specific rules for each unique combination of your inventory. When you add a rule, select your targeting. Learn more.
  6. Report on native ads
Report on native ads as you would for other ads in Ad Exchange. When you report with the Creative size dimension, you’ll see a special “Native” value for native ad impressions. You can also use native ad formats and native styles as report dimensions. Learn more.

That’s it! DFP and Ad Exchange take care of the rest. We’ll render the ads with the right styles and deliver them to the desired destinations, whether it be desktop web, mobile web, or apps. See below for detailed instructions.
