Default ad types, ad styles, and backup ads rule in Ad Exchange
To ensure that all bid requests have properly targeted inventory, an assigned ad type, and a proper way to handle backup ads, all accounts consist of a default ad types, ad styles and backup ads rule in Ad Exchange. The default rule is used when rules with other ad types, ad styles, and backup ads setups do not apply to an impression, that is, the default rule applies ad types, ad styles and backup ad settings for any impressions that are not called out in other rules. This default rule is initially set to the following:
- (THIS CANNOT BE EDITED) Target all inventory, all geographies, and all sizes.
- (THIS CAN BE EDITED) (AdWords ads only) Ad style is set to show the Google default.
- (THIS CAN BE EDITED) Ad type defaults to display & text ads.
- (THIS CAN BE EDITED) Backup ads always show a blank space.
A default rule that applies to all bid requests is set at the lowest priority level. If no active rule higher than the default exists, the default rule is applied to bid requests and wins the ad.
