Diagnostic logging in AdWords Editor

Diagnostic logging is a troubleshooting mode. When diagnostic logging is enabled, AdWords Editor automatically saves reports containing messages sent between AdWords Editor and the AdWords server. If you encounter technical problems, AdWords Specialists may request that you send us the logs to help our engineers troubleshoot the issue.

Enabling diagnostic logging

Diagnostic logging is disabled by default. To enable it, follow these steps:

  1. Open your AdWords Editor settings:
    • Windows: Select Tools > Settings.
    • Mac: Select Google AdWords Editor > Preferences.
  2. On the General tab, under Other, select Enable diagnostic logging.
  3. Click OK.

The diagnostic logs are saved on your computer. The log files are generally less than 20MB in size.

Sending diagnostic logs

If an AdWords Specialist asks you to send your diagnostic logs, follow the steps below to send the files. (You must have first enabled diagnostic logging as described above.)

  1. Locate the folder containing the diagnostic logs, where [username] is your username:
    • Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10:
Use Windows Explorer to find C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Google-AdWords-Editor\INSERT THE HIGHEST VERSION NUMBER HERE\NetworkLogs
      • To find the correct folder, make sure to search for the one with the highest AdWords Editor version number.
    • Mac:
Use a Finder window to find ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Google-AdWords-Editor/INSERT THE HIGHEST VERSION NUMBER HERE/NetworkLogs
      • To find the correct folder, make sure to search for the one with the highest AdWords Editor version number. (If the Library folder isn't visible, press Command+Shift+G, then type ~/Library and click Go.)
  2. Open the folder to see the diagnostic log files:
    • ape_network_log.log
    • ape_network_log_Backup.log
  3. Once you've located the files, zip them to reduce the size of your email attachment:
    • Windows: Select all of the files, then right-click one of the files and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
    • Mac: Select all of the files, then select File > Compress or Create Archive.
  4. Attach the zipped files to an email and send it to the AdWords Specialist that requested the diagnostic logs.
