Copy and paste ads, ad groups, keywords and campaigns

Instead of creating new ads, keywords, ad groups and campaigns every time that you want to improve your account, you can save time and work by copying your existing ads, ad groups, keywords and campaigns. For example, you could copy an existing campaign to use it as a template for a new campaign or you could copy a keyword list from one ad group to another so that you have a headstart on building the new ad group’s keyword list.

Copy campaigns

If you’ve already set up a successful campaign, you can use it to get a head start when setting up your next campaign. To do this, copy the campaign, then modify one of the copies. That way you start with the same structure and settings for your ad groups, ads and keywords.

To duplicate a campaign:

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at https://adwords.google.com.au.
  2. Click the Campaigns tab.
  3. Select the box next to the campaign that you would like to duplicate.
  4. From the Edit menu, click Copy (or Control-C for PCs, Command-C for Macs).
  5. Then, from the Edit menu, click Paste (or Control-V for PCs, Command-V for Macs).
  6. Optional: In the dialogue box that appears, select the box next to “Pause new campaigns after pasting” to create new campaigns that are paused. Otherwise, any copies of campaigns that were active when copied will be active when pasted.
  7. Click Paste

You will now have a new campaign that will have the same structure and settings as your original campaign (including your targeting settings, bid strategies, negative keywords and more). However, it will not have any campaign, keyword or ad history. If you want to keep both campaigns active, we recommend keeping your original campaign running (so that it continues with the history that it’s already generated) and modifying the new campaign.

Copy keywords

To copy keywords from an ad group in a Search Network campaign:

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at https://adwords.google.com.au.
  2. Click the Campaigns tab.
  3. Go to the Keywords tab.
  4. Tick the boxes next to the keywords that you would like to copy. Then, from the Edit drop-down menu, choose Copy (or Control-C for PCs, Command-C for Macs).

  6. Click on the ad group where you want to put the copied keywords.

  8. Optional: In the dialogue box that appears, select the box next to “Pause new keywords after copying” to create new keywords that are paused. Otherwise, any copies of keywords that were active when copied will be active when pasted.
  9. Click Paste

When you copy keywords, they will use the budget of the campaign that you paste them into. You also have the option to copy their bids and landing page URLs. Otherwise, you’ll need to set bids and landing page URLs for these keywords after you’ve pasted them.

  • Paste: Ad groups, ads and keywords can be pasted into multiple places at the same time. To do this, follow the instructions for copying but instead of selecting the box next to one place to paste, select multiple places.
