On 26 May 2020, Google will update its political content policy for New Zealand. This will include the following changes:
Election ads in New Zealand are ads that feature any of the following:
- A political party, current elected officeholder or candidate for the New Zealand Parliament; or
- A referendum option up for vote, a referendum option proponent, or a call to vote once a national referendum is officially declared by an Act or Order in Council.
All advertisers running election ads in New Zealand must be verified by Google. Verification to run election ads in New Zealand will be available from 19 May 2020. Information about verification requirements can be found here.
On 26 May 2020, Google will also update its political content policy to specify that verification to run election ads must be of the end advertiser, not the agency or intermediary acting on their behalf. For example, an agency advertising on behalf of a political party should verify as the political party.
